I am in dire need of help here. I have a customer who wanted new lifters and cam in his olds. I initially got some bad lifters not knowing the issue, the issue I had was excessive smoke out of both banks on the exhaust I did research and saw on this forum that said lifters could cause excessive oiling up top. I did extensive research and found a business called clay smith cams that stated their lifters were American made and good to go. I just installed that set which costed 640 dollars and just pulled the valve cover and still have all pushrods spewing oil out of them. How can I resolve this as fast as possible? Did I get another bad set of lifters can I get some pushrods that restrict oil flow to the top? Do I need to change the oil pump to a lower gpm unit?

The issue is that the excessive amount of oil coming out of the top is going through the valves and smoking like a freight train out of the back.

 

The only lifters to use in this day and time is HyLift Johnson/Topline. You can buy from them direct @ 800-441-1400 You will be looking @ about $500 for a set of 16.The Chinese lifters will cause too much oil to the top and flood the seals. You might restrict the oil to the pushrods with pipe cleaners but I haven't tried that but @ this point considering how deep you are into this it might work. Good Luck.

 

Clay Smith cams told me there’s were Johnson lifters made in America. Did I get lied to or what?

If you have smoke pouring out of the exhaust, then you have worn exhaust guides or clogged drain holes in the head.
Or both.
The second generation .921 lifter is supposed to push oil up through the hollow pushrod to the rockers.
Poor drain back is usually the cause of too much oil in the topside.

 

I don't know if they lied to you or not but the Chinese lifters are cheaper than Hylifts. How did they come boxed? were they in clear bags or in a white box?

 

They came in a clay smith cams box. Each lifter had their logo etched onto the side. What they told me is that they were Johnson lifters and they just rebrand them and put them in their own box.

 

I tried pipe cleaners in pushrods and the oil pressure pushed them up and the holes in the rocker cups kept shearing them off so when I checked them they were a lot shorter! I have successfully used a custom metering plate on solid lifters with an offset 0.055" hole in it so not much oil got to the pushrods. I would disassemble a stock lifter and look at its oil metering and try to duplicate it in the new lifters. Also, I never put new lifters on a used cam--it is inviting failure. Also use moly cam lube on the lifters and lobes. Change oil after 20 minutes run-in at 2000-2500 rpm because the moly plugs the filter.
