66' Toro Q-Jet Help Please...
Hello....
I recently got Toro fever! Plum in color and the chrome is not bad either. I bought it inspected a week ago. I ran it through its paces.. easy acceleration(smooth shifting)... floored it(some hesitation like a massive fuel dump and it didnt seem to kick down like I thought it should).... 55 mph, dropped it into "S" hammered the pedal and she took off(again with a burp).... smelled fuel in the passenger compartment. The trans feels healthy. Not a single noise from the motor and the 425 doesn't have a discernible miss to my ear.
So..
I started replacing vacuum lines from the carb out, they were all pretty brittle/loose fitting. Gave her the run through again... acts roughly the same and still smelled raw fuel in the car. I sniffed the tailpipe and it burned my nose and eyes..
I've read that the 66 Toro Q-jets had issues with the diaphragm failing with bad consequences...
I want to freshen the carb up but I see different info as to the jets etc that may be in it. I dont know what to expect to see in it and what kit I should get. I want to keep the car as stock as I can. I found 2 Bulletins: 9D-5(10/1965) and 9D-5(5/1973) it seems I'm missing 9D-5(11/1968).
Which should I use? Where can I find 9D-5(11/1968) if I need it?
Carb info:
Copper colored round tag with a round hole in the center on the driver side of the carb.
Copper tag stamped: C6 RH 7026250 and(some number, I think its a 5 by itself)
Air Horn stamped: 31111
Idle Compensator Cover stamped: RP 29865
Any help is MORE than appreciated.

A bog on acceleration sounds like the vacuum break diaphragm is leaky or not releasing slowly so that the secondary air valve opens slowly, over a period of o 1-2 seconds. BTDT.
I want to freshen the carb up but I see different info as to the jets etc that may be in it.

carb kit won't change the jetting. I understand the '66 first year of issue QJets have a different needle/ seat that they quit using for good reason. Kit should have a better design part. Do the kit, it's gotta be better.
I dont know what to expect to see in it and what kit I should get.

So, what is your level of experise? Have you read a book or two or at least perused the section in a Chilton's? Can you check the vacuum break unit? You understand the 6 basic systems of the carburetor?

TSB's are for oddball quirks that were discovered. Helpful, but not really the basic info on rebuilding. The kit will come with instructions and diagrams, and charts of the settings for 100 different similar carbs. And a measuring stick typically. You will want to also get a new float and vacuum break of course. I recpommend CARBJUNKYS as seen on ebay.

1-2 seconds fits.

I dont want to change jetting unless(they quit using for good reason). I want to keep it stock.
Kit make/model? I didnt get to look at your links yet(will do after this post).

Better than a first timer but not moderate!!!!! I rebuilt a 72 Mav I6 carb when I was 16(with the help of my farmer cousin!) I have the 2 Bulletins listed earlier and have started to read the earliest. The Olds Chassis Service Manual/body manual shipped out today from Faxon Literature.
A wild guess on the 6 might be ehhhh.... air, fuel, amount of air, amount of fuel, timing of the air dump and timing of the fuel dump???? (uncomfortable chuckle)!!!

I wasnt sure if the numbers or shape of the tag would tell me if this was an early problematic Q-Jet

Greatness(from what I understand from seeing that name ALL over the Forum) is definitely an option.

I want it done right. This is a project... my 14 year old son already wants to drive it to school when he gets his licence(first thing I've done right in his eyes!)... Its part self satisfaction of doing it right(as much as my son and I can... and doing the car justice.
BTW.... Can he pour a good Gin and Tonic... if so, it'll be good company!
