455 Rattle Noise

Hey guys I just recently purchased a 1971 Olds Cutlass Supreme Convertible 455 and it seems to have a rattle noise u front. I was wondering if you think it's the water pump or ac compressor. I'm going to cut the ac compressor belt off tomorrow because it not in use and see if it clears up. If not I don't know what it would be. Any thoughts would help. Thanks.

original timing chain ?

the originals are pretty famous for loosening up after the plastic coated teeth wear off

I couldnt tell you because I bought it last week. It mostly rattle as soon as you cut the car off. I thought it was the ac but I cut the belt and thats not it. Kind of got me puzzled.

Remove the belts and run it to see if the noise is still there. I would not cut the a/c belts. Just remove them.

The ac is not currently working at the moment. I've got to get it fixed. I'm going to try that and then if I still have it you would say its the timing chain.

You said it "rattles" right after you turn the car off? That sounds like pre-ignition to me...

If it runs on after you turn it off, that's pre-ignition. Check to see what your idle speed is set to it may be too high.
