455 question

455 question
I picked up a 455 olds a while back for my 66 chevy truck and ordered forged pistons for it,it has an oil filter housing with fittings on it for what looks like oil cooler hookups and it has a windage tray that bolts too the last 2 main caps is this out of a tornado? it has J heads im just curious what it might have come out of
#2
It sounds like it to me. What is the VIN derivative stamped onto the block below #1 spark plug? It should be something like 33M705324
3 = Oldsmobile
3 = the model year (1973)
M = Lansing MI assembly plant
705324 = last 6 of the VIN from the car it came out of

J heads 73-76 low compression engines [due to pistons]
Oil filter with cooler lines = Diesel typically
Windage = Toronado pretty much for sure. Does the oil pan have a scraper down along the one side also and a rise before the sump drop, to clear an axle under the engine?

Yea it looks to have the scraper, the filter housing is what threw me off i was wondering if they used this configuration in a motorhome or something industrial, it is a low compression engine for sure with the dish size, I ordered high compression pistons (L2323f) the J heads will probably go in favor of something older or maybe aluminum heads I just want something with a little more passing power then the 292 6 thats in it now

I had stock J heads on a 455 with just a standard clean up with a valve job and I can't say that it was down on power. Could it have been better? Sure. But I was on a budget and they were in good shape so I used them.
I had the same pistons you are getting, but cast (I don't think they make them any more) with an Erson JB100 cam (.504/.504 adv 296°/306° @.050 228°/235°) with the cam installed 4° advanced.
I had the engine in a 1970 Cutlass S with a TH400 and a B&M holeshot 2500 RPM stall converter and a 2.56 posi.
I managed a 13.89 @ 97 MPH in that car and I figure that if I had known more about carbs at the time it would have been better. Add a better gear and it was easily a mid 12 sec car.
Can you make more power with different heads? Absolutely. But the J heads are not so bad that the car won't move out of it's own way. As a matter of fact that thing was a tire fryer. It was a good thing that I worked somewhere that sold high performance parts and tires or I would have been broke. Take offs were my friend.
Here are the cam specs (5th one down)

The filter adapter with cooling lines was only used on the Olds diesel motors, but it bolts to any 1964-1990 Olds V8 block. It obviously didn't come from the factory on this particular motor because the diesel (and this adapter) weren't released until the 1977 model year and 455 production ended in the 1976 model year. This motor has been at least partly reassembled with a combination of parts, so you don't really know what you have without tearing it down.

Im taking the block in to be bored i have L2323 .040 over pistons and the box says 0.001 minimum is that a little tight or has times changed? What are some of your guys recomendations?

The oil cooler adapters were also found on motor homes with 455s for additional cooling and they are a nice addition to add an oil cooler. Good luck with your motor and dont forget the rear gear is important as a 2.56 rear gear wont get you moving too well unless your going to be a highway star.

Erson still makes the JB100. It's just a TQ50 on a 112 instead of a 110. It was originally designed for jet boats but works well in other applications too.

All of them.
Seriously, these days any 1968-76 455 is a good core for building. The 1971-later motors have lower compression, and the 1973-later motors have J heads, but all that can be fixed. The "best" 1968-70 motors will command a premium if they are complete and running.

i never did look at the vin specific number, i got the block back from the machine shop, he had for a month i had it bored .040 over and had the clearance set for .005 for speedpro forged pistons and had durabond cam bearings put in (the back groove type) i also started porting the J heads then decided against using them because id rather start out with a better casting and Gene has some better castings that ive been talking to him about and my garage isnt heated and its 12 degrees outside so i have the block bagged on the stand and with no warm weather in sight im thinking its ham radio season now ( inside hobby) but ive got to order rings and bearings and balance the pistons and rods so i can get a bobweight and have the crank balanced but in the spring time ill probably run a build thread on the project, its a 66 Chevy truck but i have a disc brake front end to put under it and stuff like that to do yet as well ill go out to the garage and get the vin specific number i know for sure it has a tornado pan and was set up for oil cooling

You stated that you're a HAM op, so I can infer that you are at least somewhat intelligent. All we ask is that when making a post to use proper punctuation, that's all. It just makes it so much easier to read and understand the information that you are intending to convey to us.

Seriously, if you are asking for help or information, it's in your own best interest to be as clear as possible in your post. Those of us who didn't grow up with texting and emojis need help. Hopefully, we can help you with your questions..

I'm plenty patient, but to be basically called a moron for a few punctuation errors is a little redicules but I can't be that stupid I guess (after all I do have a ham radio license) according to Randy and Mark says he dont waist time reading posts like that, well i guess i know where I won't be buying a valve train from, but as far as patience I have a lot of it, I'm not a spring chicken myself (46) besides being a ham radio operator I'm also a carded machinist and a business owner and I built it all from nothing but a 10th grade education and common sense this forum is a great site but when you have arragant people on here that treat others like they're morons because they have a few questions and they think they are better then everyone else because they can turn a wrench more power to them, as far as I'm concerned you can disable my account because i sure as hell won't correct my punctuation so Mark can read my posts and I can save 5 bucks on a camshaft or to please Randy because he's bored I'm not here to be judged or save money, money I have plenty of but what I don't have is tolerance but stupid bull...t

That escalated way beyond the intended response.
The whole point was it is hard to read when there is no punctuation at all. If you feel you need to leave, well I'm sorry for that. Apparently I struck a nerve because you directly attacked me for it, but I have no ill will about it.
You do what you need to do, and have a happy new year.

Sentence structure and punctuation isn't my strong suit, plus typing It on a tablet that wants to correct everything don't help, but if the idea of a forum is to answer questions and to help out then that's what it should be not to be judgemental, or say "I dont even waist the time reading Those posts" when obviously you did, if I wanted an English lesson I'd go back to school not sign into a muscle car forum

X2. And if you don't want to get anything from me that's fine. That's a shame though because I've helped dozens on here and elsewhere.
But put yourself in our place. You say you're a business owner, suppose someone walks thru your door and rambles on just like your posts, tells you everything all in one breath. You wouldn't be tempted to say " hey can you please explain what it is you need?"
I think you probably would.
Have a happy new year.

Man please guys just cool it.. And people on here must be able to read to help anybody on this site...We should be using this site to swap info and gain knowledge not back and forth arguing with one another...
#33
Basically they didnt understand what was being said and no they didnt have to nudge you for it.... So if the question still stands can you please retype it again so we can get this resolved instead of coming at one another....

If someone did walk threw my door and ramble on (and they have) I would ask them just that, to slow down and explain, I wouldn't look at them and say "run.....on....sentance" or say to them I know your somewhat intelligent because you can pass a ham test, yes my post rambled on ill agree with that but there is a thing called respect, it's as simple as don't answer the post or if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all, I think alot of people like to hide behind a keyboard because if that was said to my face I'd guarantee it would only happen once

I use the tablet a lot too, the "auto incorrect" feature can be maddening. I also agree the common punctuation marks are accessed by 'switching' the popup keyboard and it can be a PITA. You can tell Im at a PC now because there is punctuation and capitalization.
Anyway I dont think its a big deal to read run on sentence posts, but the auto incorrected phone posts are difficult to decipher for sure.
I dont think any disrespect was intended, its difficult to convey context or feeling thru the keyboard and sometimes a response can be misconstrued.
Im w Kyron lets just talk olds and let it go
