455 Oiling question...
Ok, need some information. I'm not planning any major racing with this motor so I don't forsee ALL the oil sitting under the intake or in the valve covers. The machine shop is going to give me a free steam clean so I'm going to take advantage and do some work on the oil draining. I know the openings at the bottem of the lifter valley need the casting slag removed. then on to the oil drain hole... (as well as all the rest of the casing slag on the block of course but that has nothing to do with oiling, but stress fracture points)
I understand the concept of getting the oil back to the pump as quick as possible.
but this poses another question... I heard/read something about a modification to the threaded plug at the end of the lifter run getting a hole drilled in it for some reason. Im NOT just going to arbitrarily do something I'm not totally understanding so I want to know what that's all about.
What is it for and why is it done?

Hey John
I think this thread covers it pretty well.

Perfect, thanks. I did search but this thread didn't show up. I may have overlooked it because of the title.
so, my answer seems to be a .030 hole to oil the distributor gear. And I guess there is on the timing chain side as well...

The timing chain oiling comes from the opposite galley - so each galley has one oil squirter.
The timing chain plugs are physically different side to side, so as long as you have a correct set, you're fine. It's common for the timing chain squirter plug to get blocked with crud.

The holes lube the chain and dist. gear, and also purge the galleys. I use a die grinder with cadrbide bur to clean the flashing as noted in the original post, but the secret to oil drain down is not to send an excessive amount up to the rockers in the first place. You need enough to lube the rocker pivots and cool the valve springs; Olds lifters meter the right amount, and Chevy lifters send too much up there.
