455 Carb

Hey guys, I got the 455 motor in the Delta 88. It runs good, I got the timing and all that done but I got only one problem with it. And its the choke, I believe. Ive adjusted it many times cold, still wouldnt work right. It was closed when I adjusted it cold but then it doesnt want to kick off. Then I got the machine shop to even help me when it was hot. The problem is the choke doesnt go on for cold start. But once its hot, and you shut the car off, then turn it back on, you can sometimes hear, not always that the fast idle kicks in for about 3 seconds then goes back to normal idle speed. I got the idle set at 800 rpm and the fast idle set at 1050. I bought this rebuilt carb new on ebay. They did all that fancy cleaning stuff and replaced everything, but it sounds to be that the choke coil might be bad? is this right. Also just recently its been dieseling bad when i shut it off, is this got something to do with the choke? I placed my timing according to the book. I use 91 octane gas, i need help, thanks guys

Is it an electric or hot air choke? I doubt the coil is bad unless it's actually broken.

As far as this goes.....what year is the engine? Are you running points or HEI? At what RPM are you setting initial timing?

All of this plays a part.

Have you double checked the setting on your choke. I agree with Randy, chances are that your choke isn't "broken." Please give us info on your timing. You're car might diesel if the timing is too far advanced or if your idle is set a bit too high.

Hi guys, the choke is a hot air choke. Its a quadrajet carb (7041251) from 1971. The engine is a 1971 455 the only thing not 1971 is the Ka Heads and all the good new stuff i put inside of it. I have points distributor. I set ignition timing at 10 degrees at 1100 RPM. I set slow idle at 800 rpm, i thought this was high but i couldnt get it to stay running when i drove it, but then i found out it was really the choke closed. I set fast idle at 1050 rpm. other than the choke and disseling it runs great. One other question, on the idle mixture screws how many turns out should i turn them i couldnt find this info, that may also play a part in it, not sure, thanks

You should start idle mixture screws at 2.5 turns out each. Then use a vacuum gauge to set the idle mixture screws for maximum manifold vacuum.

thanks for that info, the timing seemed to be a little advanced, it wasnt that way before but i just keep driving it and breaking it in, i noticed its loosening up a little bit more now. its not dieseling no more, i retimined it, also the one of the choke linkages that goes down by the fast idle was on the wrong side so i took it apart adjusted it its fine now too, thanks
