1969 Toro engine Camshaft and Camshaft bearing issues

What causes staining on the Camshaft bearing surface area and matching small bumps on the upper camshaft bearings?

Botonn surface of front cam bearing

Top surface of front cam bearing

Staining on camshaft (401348)

More staining

Middle camshaft upper surface

Front camshaft bearing cleaned with a rag

Looks like someone put an oil additive in the engine at some point. The bumps on the bearing surface may be a build-up of that additive and stained the bearing surface of the cam where they touched. It is even on the base circle of the cam lobes too. I haven't taken too many engines apart, but I've never seen anything like that.

Is it all original from 69 ? If so it actually looks pretty decent compared to a lot that I see. Hard to tell from your close up pics of the bearings, cant really see much. Coolant getting in the oil will cause pitting on bearings and 50 year old engines always have corrosion going on inside. I don't see anything that I would consider unusual.

The actual cam journals are all within factory specs. I'm wondering if the bearings were originally FIP (fit in place) type and they were poorly honed due to bumps on upper portions of each bearing.

The upper part of the bearing gets no real wear and over the years moisture from condensation etc gets in there. I don't think the bearings were ever honed to fit. They were bored if anything. That pitting on yours is from moisture.

Bored, line reamed........but never honed. BillK is totally correct.

Could these cam bearings still be used since original cam journals measure within spec?
This is supposed to be a budget build, but I could be persuaded to upgrade cam and bearings, if i could get a recommendation for a replacement camshaft.
