1966 Toronado - Want to confirm original motor
Hi all,
Recently I bought a '66 Toronado. Lots of preliminary info is in the Major Builds forum under "Ford Family Adopts a 1966 Toronado."
I'm a life-long Ford guy and a complete Olds newb.
My Toro says 53k on the odometer and many things lead me to believe that is true - orig ball joints, "twist" shocks, solid body...
So I'm thinking & hoping the motor is all original. Only problem is it has a rod knock. My plan is to rebuild it and use the car as a 9-month daily driver.
Before I tear into the motor I want to confirm what I have. How can I confirm the block and heads are original to the car, or at least to a '66 Toro? I have read about the 39 degree cam angle and the .921" lifter diameter for the early Toros. And there is all kinds of info out there for 425 rebuilds, but the difference between the 39 and 45 cam banks and cranks ( Toros are forged? ) has me a bit confused.
So I just want to know what I have before I start planning the rebuild.
Fire away fellas! Thanks!
Ron

There is no vin number stamped on your 1966 block. You can look at the build date of the car, and compare the casting dates on many of the parts to see if they make sense. The carb, distributor, alternator have codes stamped in them that should show they're original for a 1966 Toronado.
The block should be a D casting 425 block and the heads should have large valve B castings. The intake should have a large C cast into it. This will tell you if the major parts are from a 1966 Toronado.
I've got a complete 1966 Toro engine and I believe there's several other members with parts in case you come up needing replacement parts. My engine is a shade of green, I believe its the original paint.

Thanks John - that's some great info. Where can I find the D on the block and the B on the heads? I will take a look tomorrow and see what I can find on the block, heads, carb, and accesories. I thought the Toro motors were painted a slate blue color?

Check out this thread. There's an engine painted Ford Blue with the D between the water pump and intake manifold. It also has C heads on it, so yours will have a large B just below and in front of the drivers side spark plug closest to the radiator. Then the letter C on the intake can be seen in the photo below, just to the left of the firing order. Its possible the engine I have was repainted green, that's the problem with engines that have been around for a while. Look for the casting numbers and don't pay too much attention to the color of the paint.

A big THANKS!! for that info! It looks like I have the D block, the B heads, and the C intake. The block looks to be the slate blue color under all the grime. Also, the carb is a Quadra-Jet, so I'm hoping it is the right/original model. From what I've read I think I should send the carb to Sparky for the royal treatment. Below are some pics...

The 1966 quadrajets I've seen all had the number stamped into a disc. For 1967 I've seen both the disc and stamped into the body. Attached is a photo of a 1967 carb with the disc. But if your not needing to be numbers matching I've heard the early quadrajets are not as good as the later designs. Sparky could fill you in on that with more details. John

Thanks John. I'm not totally hung up on originality. I just want to figure out what I have before I start the motor rebuild. I will give Sparky a buzz sometime soon to discuss the carb.
