1965 425 starfire

What do you guy's think of this? Bought a starfire that had been sitting inside for 28 yrs (so I was told). It ran and drove but not very well. Rebuilt the carb and did all the needed thing to make it road worthy. I put a compression test on all cylinders and they were all 185 -195 Thought that was good. Started driving it and it was doing very well. One fine saturday I went for a cruise and I thought I blew a rod. (lot of metal noise) Got it home to find out what was wrong and decided to do a compression check because it still turned over. I couldn't get 90 lbs out of any cylinder and no compression out of one. A valve broke and trashed the piston and cylinder bore. It did not jump time. What are your thoughts on this?

Wow, you were reading my mind. How did you confirm that it wasn't? Both by position and visual examination of timing gear?

We lost a 54 Olds motor once by over revving it and it dropped a valve. It happens. What a bummer.

Dropped a valve in my 85 LeSabre with a 307. Saddest day of my life.

I too have learned the hard way, running an old piece o' crap motor.
Now I take everything apart and rebuild before I run it.

Question

Thought I would post some pics of the valve that crashed my starfire
motor. A lot of carbon build up on the stem did the carbon and moisture do it? Looks like it (carbon) was eating it up.
