Looking for a replacement for my torx drain plug, mine is pretty beat up . Is there a new replacement or a source for a good used one? Thanks, Tom

 

I have no idea but perhaps you could weld a bolt head or a cut off socket to your old one?

 

Have you looked in the Help section at your local auto parts store? If they don't have anything you can buy something like this based on the thread size and pitch:

The only bad thing is that the new bolt probably won't be a Torx bolt. Then again, I didn't think Torx was used on any classic Oldsmobiles...

 

Torx fasteners were not used in 1965. That's an eight point drive, Torx has six. The drain plug is really just two 1/2" square drive recesses overlapping by 45 degrees. You can remove it with a 1/2" square drive ratchet and no socket. Threads are pretty common. Just match them up with other drain plugs.

 

Oh, the simple days. Pain in the but with all the different sockets needed now.

 

Thanks for replies. I can still engage the plug with a 1/2 drive but just barely. Might try to weld on a hex as suggested, haven't been able to find a new 7/8-20 thread ( I think thats the size) drain plug.

 

Not so, the thread is something like 7/8-20. I tried to find threaded rod this size to make one but finally found a stock one that I bought one from another CO member. I would have to cut special thread on bar stock to make one.

The GM part number for this drain plug is 577646 .
I googled the number and came up with this lead . You will have to call them to make sure they have it and get a price .

Looked at the old one I have and the threads are pulled and it is not usable. I remember that is why I needed another one.
