Oil Pan Drain Plug

What tool is required to remove the drain plug from a 62 Starfire? It looks like a large allen wrench, I tried several bolt heads trying to find something that fit, but none did.

A good 1/2" drive ratchet should get it out. Don't use an extension as its corners will be round enough to slip in the drain plug recess. The corners on the ratchet itself or sometimes on a good breaker bar will be sharp enough not to slip.

And yes, there was a special 8-pointed drain plug tool specifically for this application, 59-67 Olds V8. You find them sometimes on tool trailers at swap meets, or possibly ebay (and the seller usually has no idea what the tool is for).

Socket works perfect. I changed the plug on mine for those moments when I take it to a quick lube shop....keeps the youngsters from have a panic attack

Thanks guys. It did not occur to me to try a square shaped tool! Good thing I have a Topsider.
While we are in the area of the oil pan. What is that large round thing on the side of the oil pan just under the oil filter for?

THAT is part of the fun of having these cars. PNDSLR shift patterns freak 'em out too. I've had more than one ask me "how do you make this car back up?"

"Put it in reverse."

"WHERE'S REVERSE?!"

And when I show them, I usually get "Ain't never seen no car like this."
