Have 2001 Aurora V-6 and replaced both sensor before and after converter due to check engine light. They last a few thousand miles and check engine code comes back for bad sensors. Have done this three times and light is back on for both. No other codes appear. Had converter changed after second time and it did not prevent sensors from appearing bad again. Any ideas?

 

Are these AC delco sensors or Bosch? I heard of issues with some Bosch ones before (mainly for 307s though).

Sounds like there may be another underlying cause, where new sensors help just enough to keep the light off for a thousand or so. Are you burning oil or too many gas additives that could be fouling the sensors?

Computer controls are my weakness...

 

Have you checked the voltage readings on the O2 sensors. Eventhough you are getting a code for bad O2 sensors you need to check the reading at the sensor. I'm sure the troubleshooting manual lists good voltages for the O2 sensors. If they read correctly then follow the troubleshooting procedure to isolate the problem.

 

what is the code? i have seen some of the scanners from the auto parts store say
"O2 sensor reading low" then people buy O2 sensors thinking that it the problem. then still have a problem shortly after. sometime they are doing there job but something else is the problem making them read low. i am no expert so i can't explain it verry well but i have seen some changed when that was not the problem. you may check with someone else to see what there scanner tells them.

 

On a friend's car, I once saw a broken throttle body intake (plastic) cause an O2 error. It was broken from some careless 'mechanic' long ago.

 

Based on some internet searching I just changed the CKP crankcase positioning sensor and seems to run better. Still have to get some one to do relearn process at dealer I guess. I reset all codes and we shall see if the o2 ones return.

 

How do you "reset" all the codes...disconnect the battery?

 

Ken, disconnecting the battery won't reset the codes on a 2001 Olds since it is OBD II. To reset the codes you have to hook up a scanner to the computer and tell it to reset. You can probably have your local auto parts store do this for free if your 2001 Aurora is giving you trouble.

 

OK thanks. My engine light came on and I had it looked at. It said the transmission temp was hot however the mechanic checked the temp and said the oil was clean and the temp was fine. If I remember correctly it was code P0710. Car shifts smooth in all gears.

 

Interesting. I wonder why it is throwing that code if the transmission temp is ok?
