Your Aurora is probably OBD 1.5. 96 was the first full year for OBD2. I used an Innova 3160 for the 96 98 I owned. It was the second best car I've ever driven behind @Oldsguy 76 98 he had when I was younger.
You need to look at your Assembly Line Data Link under the dash. Is it GM Type 1 (top) or OBD2 (bottom)?
BTW, any auto parts store should be able to scan the codes your car might have stored. Plus, if it's isn't OBD2 all you need to check the codes is a paperclip.
I remember dealing with my 95 Aurora. Tech buddy at the dealership said they had the newer-style OBDII plug but was still OBDI so he needed to use some kind of adapter to hook up his Tech2 scanner...interestingly, I'm just now hearing this being called OBD1.5. I wonder how many other GM models in '95 were like this? Cadillac?
Is buying another scanner his only option? Wouldn't this inexpensive adapter work if he already has access to an older code reader?
The problem is his code reader doesn't have the pre-OBDII software. It won't know what to do. This would be like plugging in your xbox controller into a Playstation.
The Inova 3120 scanner I bought off eBay. I was told it had the program my 92. Toronado had the same problem it wouldn’t read and when I called Inova come to find out it’s not program for the Torado or for the aurora I’ll have to look into the 3160 Innova thanks for all the information guys
