I have a 1999 Alero. Over the last couple of days the ABS light has flashed on and off,also I was driving on the highway yesterday and the traction control light came on for a few minutes and then went out. The roads were bare and dry. Any ideas what could cause this. The garages around here want $125. to run a test on it.

 

You may want to check automotiveforums.com/alero tab.
If memory serves me right that you have a wheel bearing going, it has the ABS sensor built in the hub assembly.

That subject should be in there multiple times.

Sounds like you took it to GM. A scan shouldn't cost 125.00 Most shops out here will do a scan for around 70.00. That's extra from the cost of the repair though. If it's the bearing and sensor this is the part, NAPA stocks it for left and right sides.

 

I'd agree with the previous posts. Most times the wheel speed sensor in the hubs either fail or if they are mounted externally to the hub are subject to rust jacking which causes the sensor to move out farther and lose signal. I've had a couple of GM vehicles do that. Cleaned one to get the rust off but had to replace the hub on the other. It usually manifested with the abs/parking brake lights and/or traction control. Just beware though the 2000 series Sierras went through a similar fault. When the abs system loses signal the computer may think the wheels are slipping at low speed and try to actuate the ABS. You will have a hard time stopping at slow speeds if the ABS kicks in.
