Alero Id 1999-2004

What differences are there to seperate these years?

Looking for a newer car and I am "Alero-illiterate".

I doubt you'll see any real exterior differences.
The body style stayed exactly the same during it's entire production run. The only differences were minor trim and equipment changes.

I drive a black '01 GL coupe and my stepdaughter has a black '03 GL sedan.
If it weren't for the doors, you wouldn't know which was which.

Well there isn't any body difference in all five years of production but there are some differences between years

99-01 had the 2.4 twin cam based off the 2.3 HO in the 442 in the early 90's 02-04 got the 2.2 ecotec motor. All years had the same V6 60* Chevy based engine

99 had different speaker grilles on the back deck

99-00 had the same 32 pin radio as the 96-98 Oldsmobiles it said "Oldsmobile" just under the CD slot 01 started the newer 24 pin radio

99-00 the 6 spoke wheels in both 15 and 16 inch had a dimple in each spoke, these where NOT the high end wheels in 01 in 01 the dimple spokes where offered, but the beat wheels where a solid flat 6 spoke wheel, polished, with a carbon fiber Olds emblem on the center cap. The dimple spokes were not offered in 03 but appeared in 04 on the final 500's in 03 the spoke was rounded on the edges but the center was not dimpled, but flat

99 had no EGR

02-04 side mirrors were all flat black 99-01 they where body color but in 01 they were black on base models

03-04 had no disk rear brakes

03-04 the DRLs were moved to the low beam lights, earlier years the DRL's are the high beams

All Aleros were made in Lasning most Grand Ams were made on the same line. Most, if not all Malibus were made in Delaware

I think in 02 the center cup holder did not have a lid anymore (just in front of the arm rest)

Aleros never had On Star

99 was the only year for "Plum" (purple)

00 was the only year for Electric Blue

99-00 had "Oldsmobile" on the trunk lid, very small, in 01 that changed to a larger "Oldsmobile" (makes an 01 easy to spot with the mirrors)

03-04 with no disc brakes?
I have an 04 GLS coupe and had a sedan both had rear disc
03-04 had XM radio option.
Some early ones had TPMS? It's listed in my ops manual, it's not on mine!

Also you may want to do your homework on which level of Alero you want
GX,GL,GL2 and GLS. If you need input you can PM me.

Regards, Pat

Thanks for all the valuable information.

I am just trying to make sure the cars that are for sale are really what they claim to be.

My '01 has TPMS. It's pretty well loaded up.
