Could someone please tell me where to find the vin on a 69 olds 442.. I believe its located in the upper left hand corner of the dash on the drivers side. But if there are other places to find it that would be great.

 

The VIN can be seen in the dash on the driver side - you have to look through the windshield to see it. It should look like 344N79Lnnnnnn, where N is a number (6=convertible, 7=sport coupe or post coupe, 8=holiday coupe), L is a letter (unless it's a Canadian built car in which case ther would be a "1" in the L position (built in Oshawa Canada), and the last 6 n numbers indicate the assembly plant sequential number. If it's an American built car, the L also represents the assembly plant (E=Linden NJ, M=Lansing MI, Z= Fremont CA).

You will find the VIN (or VIN derivative) on the engine block if it is original to the car (looks like "39Lnnnnnn" stamped onto a raised pad on the forward driver side). If you have power steering, it will be under a power steering bracket and you need a mirror and a light to see the VIN derivative. The VIN derivative also might be covered in oily dirt in which case you would have to clean it off first. This same VIN derivative will also be stamped into the transmission housing (lower mid left side for THM 400 and on the left side as well for the manual transmission).

A VIN derivative is also stamped into the frame, on the top side, aft of the driver side rear wheel opening. It can be clearly seen if the body is off the car. I've heard some people say they can see it with a light and a mirror with the body on the frame but I haven't been able to do it with either my '68 or '69.

thanks i went to transfer title today and it turns out i need to get a odometer and vin verification. But since the car is not in florida and still in new york i cant do it. When my aunt went to check for it in the usual spot on the dash she said it wasnt there. Which sets me into panic mood. so at least i can double check it this way thanks.

 

You should be mileage exempt based on the age of the car and it only has a 5 digit odometer.
Here's what you're looking for in a pic (it's from my car but you can send it to your aunt along with Randy's info about location on the car) The 72 VIN is in exactly the same place - just uses different method of identifying the car

You should be able to send the Florida vin verification sheet to your Aunt and have a NY Law Enforcement Officer do the verification.

 

yea she download it off the internet and i have a cousin in the sheriffs office up there. The problem was that she couldnt see the vin in the location that it was at and was telling me she thought it was a hole. So i am freaking out down here in fl thinking i have a car with title but no vin plate. Than her friend looked at it and said its there its just rusty. I hate having to rely on other people for stuff like this.

 

So the bottom line is you got it registered? Well at least she had a friend who knew where to look - that's good. Yeah, it's kind of a helpless feeling. Too bad you couldn't be there for the road trip to do it yourself.
