65 Cutlass 442 question

Hello, When you check to see if a 65 442 is a numbers matching car, what are you looking for. Thanks.

Engine and transmission numbers must match POP card. Also must have a 4V on data plate (won't have if a Fremont Calif built car) the rear should have boxed control arms and rear sway bay also. I might be missing a few other things.

To clarify, there are no numbers that "match" on a 1965 Olds. Oldsmobile did not start stamping the block and trans with a VIN derivative stamp that matches the VIN until the 1968 model year. As noted above, Olds stamped an engine unit number on the front of the passenger side head and a trans unit number on the case. These are unrelated to the VIN, but if the Protect-O-Plate for that car is available, it will have the VIN and those unit numbers in one place. Of course, all this proves is that one cylinder head and the trans case are original. My 1967 Delta 88 is "numbers matching" despite having a later 455 short block and one head replaced. The only original part of the engine is the one head with the unit number on it.

I've found that most people who claim to have a "numbers matching" car actually have no idea what that means. On a 1967-older Olds, I start by asking "can you show me the numbers that 'match'?"

To them, the term means that they believe the engine and drivetrain to be original to the car, although they have no way of proving it.

Yeah, except for the ad that I saw for a set of "numbers matching" wheels. (I'm not making this up)
Or the "numbers matching engine" for sale that isn't attached to a car.

Should I go on?
