1970 w30 intake

Does any one have a clue as to why there is a slot instead of a bolt hole on the driver side of the w30 intake?? Maybe Joe P. can answer this one. I believe it is the third bolt position.

All the Olds v8s have that slotted hole in the 3rd location, small or big block, cast iron or aluminum! Not sure why, maybe something for assembly purposes on the line, like it maybe was the first bolt installed??. It is the near hottest part of the intake, the exhaust cross-over, but they didn't do on the pass side.

I have always wondered this myself. I always figured it was an assembly thing for high volume production but really have no clue why if that is it.

I assumed the slot was the "tight tolerance" hole that locates the intake fore/aft. The other bolt holes are oversize clearance holes. The slot is required to keep the hole tight in the fore/aft direction but still allow tolerance side-to-side since the heads are what locate the intake in that direction.
