Trying to restore a pair of 1968 442 W30 RED inner fender wells. At the present time they have a white faded crusty layer on the surface. Is there any way to bring them back to the redish/pinkish color without damaging them.

i have not tried to do this on there finders, but on 4 wheelers i have restored finders with good success. what i do is to take 400 grit wet sand paper and wet sand them for a very long time. then i will do it with 600 then 800 then 1000. this process takes a very long time and will drive you crazy but it works very well. for as much as they cost it may be worth your time. like i said, i have only done it to 4 wheeler finders. if they were mine i would not be afraid to try this. i just remembered that i did it to a OAI air breather and worked very well.

On Mar 22 someone posted a thread about using a razor to shave off the crust and then using a buffer to smooth out the lumps... I think that you can also use something like laquer thinners?? this melts the plastic and rejuvenates the surface...similar to restoring the surface on the '68 seat backs...John Green told me this a while ago...

I am doing the same to mine. Actually i have finished repainting them which can be done if you use a paint that is designed for plastic. they do need to be cleaned up first , i used a paint thinner and stif nylon brush to remove dirt and some faded yellow paint that had been oversprayed on them by the previous owner. http://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfman98/
