'72 442 with single exhaust?

I'm still looking...and I'm considering a long-distance '72 442 that I have yet to inspect.

The owner tells me he has a bunch of original paperwork (incl. protecto) that shows it's a 442 and not just a Cutlass. The VIN has the engine code as a "K", which is the 350 4bbl with single exhaust - although the car now has dual exhaust and cut-out bumper.

Could the '72 442 come with single exhaust?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

Yes, the '72 442 (W29 package) could come with single exhaust.
Look for a rear sway bar and boxed lower control arms - the W29 pkg included the firm ride and handling package.

Sounds like you are investigating long distance like I did a while back when I got mine!
Let us know what you find out...

Sadly, yes. In 1972 the 442 was demoted to an "appearance and handling" package that was available on the Cutlass Holiday Coupe, Cutlass S Sport and Holiday Coupes, and the Cutlass Supreme convertible. It could be ordered with any of the available Cutlass engines, including the 350 with single exhaust.

By the way, the cutout bumper was not factory installed on 350 cars, even when the N10 dual exhaust was ordered. Only the 455 cars got the cutout bumper. In fact, the only small block Cutlass to EVER get the cutout bumper from the factory was the 1970 Rallye 350.

File that one in the trivia file...

Thanks for the quick follow-up guys. At least I can view the "documentation" with a little less criticism now.
