68 Cutlass single exhaust options?

I have 4 door 68 Cutlass Supreme Holiday that has rust holes throughout the exhaust pipes. I was wondering what the price difference would be if I were to order a Walker front pipe and RH tail pipe from RockAuto for $96 shipped and $39 for a muffler totaling around $140 vs. taking a $39 muffler to a muffler shop and having a new rear pipe bent to exit behind the right wheel and redo front pipe?

Also, the only front pipe available for the 68 Cutlass Supreme says it is for "CONVERTIBLE; COUPE". Would I have an issue with sizing trying to fit on the 4 door?

The front pipe on a four door would be four inches longer than a two door or convert...put duals on it and let it breathe

Just take it to a good exhaust shop and have it done in aluminized pipe. You can get duals done easy enough on that car. Wouldn't go too outrageous on mufflers, a good turbo type will give you some sound, though I've always thought a four-door needs to be a little more "discreet" if you follow me.

Properly done duals with tailpipes turned down at the end, cut at a 45 degree angle and tucked up behind the bumper give a slightly sinister look to these cars. Not blatantly obvious, but enough to know that there might be more than meets the eye.

Take it to a local shop. They will give you a good price. I had duals put on my 71 98 for about $350 not including the mufflers.

I am eventually going to switch out to duals w/ Hooker Comp headers and X-Pipe. I want to do that in a few months but need to fix the current exhaust situation ASAP so I can start driving the car. I drove it 35 miles since I bought it and it has a very strong fumes coming in the car. Basically looking for a non-costly repair until I am ready to order the headers/pipes.

Thanks for the replies.

If you just need to repair it then take a hacksaw and cut off the tail pipe behind the muffler. Then you can use the fiber patch available at the auto parts store to fix any rusted parts between the manifold and muffler. That will only cost about $10. If you want to get fancy you can buy a $20 turn down to screw onto the muffler exit pipe (that way the exhaust is turned down).

Old beer cans wrapped over the holes & tied with baling wire is even cheaper !

Nowadays, even beer cans are too thin. Since it's a little chilly out, cook up a can of chicken soup and save the can.

What about the tail pipe? The tail pipe says specifically "
EXCEPT STATION WAGON; RH". Is there a size difference between the 4 door and station wagon or is the tail pipe the same size for all? Thanks

Heehee. The station wagon is a different animal. Its single exhaust tailpipe actually crosses over from one side of the car to the other. It runs down the RH side same as the others till it gets behind the axle, then it crosses over and exits on the left side on the station wagon.

The tailpipe(s) should be the same on all V8 1968 A-body coupes and sedans. Some cars had a resonator at the back, but it's commonly eliminated when exhaust is replaced.
