turn signal switch not cancelling

I have to manually shut off both left and right signal. Doesn't shut off after completing the turn. 70 442 with tilt. Any ideas how to fix?

Your canceling springs are broken.

In addition to information available on this site about this, there is a nice description of how to fix them here.

This guy has done an impressive amount of work in illustrating the takedown and function of a slightly later, but essentially identical, tilt column.

The springs should be on a HELP! card at your local auto parts store.

Glad to help out.

I find things using a combination of memory (for the name of the part and the nature of the problem) and Google. I knew that the problem was caused by broken turn signal canceling springs, so I googled that, looked at the results, and posted the better ones.

It's sheer laziness, really - I just didn't want to write up a whole description of the repair (which is very simple once you do it) myself .

What year did they start using the auto cancelling signals? I thought maybe my 72 just didn't come with that option. Guess it's the springs huh?

Earliest Olds I've owned were '68s, and they self-cancelled.
