Posi tag

All the GM A-body cars I've had w/ posi (that got the metal tag) had it fastened to the 4-5 o'clock position on the diff cover. My 442 has the W-27 cover but it's tag is fastened to the 7-8 o'clock position. Before I move it I wanted to make sure I am correct that it belongs on the passenger side. TIA.

I would move it back where it is normally seen. Since the W-27 cover was not available as a factory option, there is no other "factory correct" location. I took a quick look at the '70 assembly manual and don't see the posi tag shown at all for the iron or aluminum versions so it doesn't appear to be of any help.

This may seem too simple, but, if the print is upside down at 7 o'clock, move it to 5 o'clock.

Thanks. I guess I'll move it to the more 'traditional' location.

if there is a proper bolt that it goes on it sure would not surprise me if the guy that puts on the covers and tags on the assembly line just put it in a spot and didn't worry about it. i have seen them on cars that had never ben touched in the 2 O'clock and 5 O'clock position.

For what it's worth I pulled the read end out of my '66 F-85 this weekend to clean up and put in my '67. Here is the before pix, I don't think the rearend had ever been touched. The tag on it is upside down.

Thanks. I guess it's like most stuff with these cars, assembly line people just getting the job done, couldn't have cared less what position that tag was or whether it was backwards, especially if it wasn't specified in the assembly procedures.

My '68 442 had the tag at two o'clock...Oshawa built... No one could see it so I moved it to six o'clock for years but now I'll move it back next time I am under there... I believe that the axles went along the line upside down. That's why the code letters are stamped upside down...so the tags might be that way too...
