Hello everyone I just purchased my second Olds 442 , it's a 64 , my first was a 69 442 , great car, 4 speed , buckets ,console , but that was 1976. So now i'm the owner of a numbers matching 64. It's a post car which I believe is referred to as a club coupe, it has F 85 on the front grille along with the 442 emblem over to the driver side. It also has Cutlass on the front fenders along with the 442 emblems which also are on the dash and trunk lid. The trim tag i will spell out below

My question is ... is this a F-85 club coupe or a Cutlass Club coupe
It's all there complete car except it's missing the exhaust manifolds, had headers, and missing the air cleaner, also has a Hurst shifter, needs restored

Myself I wouldn't buy it with out the air cleaner. You can make your own or buy one as I have sold two one Calif. and one 49 State for 1K each.
No 442 on dash just F-85 with Cutlass in the same plate.

 

They did make lots of 4 spd Cutlass not 442 so check the front fender and take 442 emblem off and should be punched not drilled holes. The rear sway bar should be there and boxed control arms but not all the way boxed just half.

Welcome. Unfortunately, the 11A build date means first week of Nov, 1963, which is several months BEFORE Olds started making 1964 442s. Sorry.

 

Regardless, we'd love to see some pictures!

 

This thread has some great production info on the 1964 442s. Note that the earliest documented production date is first week of March 1964 (03A date code on the cowl tag). Note also that the Lansing plant used the 3127 cowl tag on cars that were actually badged as a Cutlass (what should have been 3227). The Fremont plant did, in fact, use the 3227 cowl tag on these cars. Olds would exhibit a similar use of the "wrong" cowl tag on the 1968-69 442s as well. Note that for 1964, the 3127 model was only the V6 Sport Coupe per the marketing literature, however there are well documented Cutlass V8 cars with the 3127 cowl tag.

 

Thanks for the info on my 64 , i'm feeling a little dumb right now, the problem with this deal is i live 900 miles from it and decided to buy it based on pictures and over an hour of questions and answers, which i didn't have enough background prior to asking, The engine is out and apart which dosn't bother me as i've built at least 100 including a real 70 W-30 455 but mostly drag race stuff. Info i have sounds correct the engine code is T038256G which i understand to be right along with the Muncie 3851325 case with correct cover and tail. If this car is just a Cutlass with a 4 speed would this engine have been available in other than a 442? Also if any one knows how many 4 speed Cutlass's built that would be of interest to me. Either way i'm not discouraged either way as i think it's a cool ride and I like the appearance better than other years. About the air cleaner... i've seen different pictures, one style has 2 good sized inlets with about 90 degrees between them, the other had smaller inlets with both parallel aimed to the front. I'm expecting delivery next Sunday Dec 10th I will be all over and under it checking axle codes. I'll get some pictures and post them better than the 30 footers i got from the seller.

Welcome to Classic Oldsmobile!! We get a lot of new members here after a purchase. It would be wise to join before the purchase and ask the questions. Still a great car and worth the resto, the 4spd is rare on the 64 Cutlass but the not as rare as the 442. My brother has a 64 vert that was optioned with the 3 speed stick on the floor. Post lots of pictures, 64's are cool cars.

Very rare car, do not see many '64-'65 Cutlass with four speed, in fact the first big block 442 with the third pedal came standard with a three speed in '65. Good luck with your project and post some pictures when you can.

1964 Olds 4bbl air cleaners will have the same housing and snorkel. Of course, only the 1964 442 came with dual snorkels. I believe some Buicks of that vintage used that housing also (again, not with dual snorkels).

 

There is a yellow 1964 442 convertible on ebay right now with an automatic. Seller says it was special ordered. He also said it came with a bench seat which was changed to bucket seats during the restoration. He claims to have the build sheet but did not show it. What a flake.

Thanks for all the air cleaner info. i'll start watching e bay, posted on here not long ago is a 64 442 in a junk yard, red, missing front clip, i've seen it several times as i go to this yard often, It was this 442 that sparked my interest sadly that car is sunk in the dirt and the frame is shot I plan on going there when they reopen.
I know of a complete Super 88 2 door hardtop there with a 394 , i didn't see the air cleaner on the engine but i'll be looking

Sorry, I should have clarified that the 394 air cleaner is quite a bit larger than the 330 air cleaner.

 

i'd be digging that rear axle out of there asap.
could be a good posi and gear ratio.

Hello everyone, the 64 Cutlass comes tomorrow morning, the seller called to mention he's put some shop manuals in the car , and...the proteco plate is in the glove box, hmmm interesting , watch for pictures

 

Joe that air cleaner looks the same as the 65 442 air cleaner, with a different tube to valve cover.

 

Close, but not quite. The snorkel is different, and note that the 64 has a tab to the right of the snorkel that indexes the top relative to the bottom so the snorkel only points forward.

 

Based on the build date the car is not a 442. 4 speed 64s are not as rare as people think. I counted once and Olds built something like 8,000 manual trans 64s. The percentage of 4 speeds was something like 90% based on known numbers.

 

I received the 64 Olds today, quite a bit more rust than the seller told me about, big surprise. It's all there as he said complete 330 engine correct dated 4GC carb, alternator,starter, Muncie M20, 3.23 posi rear , looks like original spare wheel with bias tire along with bumper jack, real 4 speed car with correct dash and floor cut for shifter 442 emblems added to trunk, no holes like i've learned, holes in front fenders drilled not stamped..... one thing is the 442 dash emblem it looks nicely done ..my question is what year might that emblem be from?? anoth







er thing is i'm still trying to figure out if this is a F-85 or Cutlass as it only has Cutlass on one front fender and no where else , floors , trunk are rough as is most of the car , but i'm still feeling good about getting such a cool Olds even if they made 8000 of them

The second digit of the VIN is a "2", which indicates a Cutlass. Emblems on the fenders are irrelevant, the VIN is what matters. Post a photo of the cowl tag.

 

Looks to be in fairly good shape considering. A nice start for a project.

 

The 442 dash emblem bolts right on from a 65 although the 64 did not come with a 442 dash emblem.

 

Do you mind sharing how much you paid for it?

 

I paid $5000 for it , it's all there except exh manifolds and air cleaner, came with a lot of extra nice body side mouldings and trim , even has the original back up light switch on the Muncie, posi tag on rear, i spun it 3.23 and nice tight posi, odo shows 42k , almost no ridge on cylinders so it might be original , has the original GM M400 bearings in it,

engine was disassembled by seller , he was good about it bagged and tagged everything
It was mentioned they made 8000 of these cars which yes is not like the 442 but way lower than my 67 SS396 which they made over 58,000

Seller never mentioned or showed in picture the rotted hood, I complained he's refunding a whole $100 , i asked for $500 good luck with that

Love be the color combo! Also, Being a Cutlass rather than a Base or Deluxe means you can get a wider array of reproduction interior parts.

 

Sorry I'm late to the party. In addition to the emblem on the dash, there was no 442 on the grille, so that can come off too. '65 had the 442 on the grille. The early emblems had pointed ends like the one on the left front fender in the picture of your car.

If you get back to the junkyard, I'm missing the left rear fender cap that's on that red 'car'. Be happy to make it worth your while if you could pull it.

FWIW there's been some research here on when '64 442s were built. Frame numbers are one of the indicators. They're stamped on the frame just in front of the left rear wheel. Mine's dated 3-30-64, although it's hard to read it on the picture I've attached. The mfg date from my ID plate is 04C = 3rd week of April. Looks like yours is 11A, that would make it 1st week of November... '63. That's considerably earlier than any of the dates that were identified last time I looked. 442 was a 3/4 year introduction and was apparently built from March-July '64. That November build date is a big red flag. I'd look for the other things as suggested above, and for a frame number like 3837595 that seems to be common on the early 442s. Frame date should tie back to the build date. Many frames seem to be around a month earlier than the factory ID plate date.

From the Id plate LA 2665 makes it a Lansing build and the 2665th car built there that year. It's my understanding that the 3127 is an F85 sports coupe body code, but that is how Lansing coded 442s in '64 even if they were Cutlasses. The Acc 2L is the 4 speed shifter cutout in the floor pan. AA paint is black, upper and lower. Hope some of this helps. Oops, My apologies Joe for repeating things you hit at the top of this thread.

 

I'm cutting up a 65 Cutlass right now with good firewall no rust if you need it and is non air. I'm in Calif.
