Just found this site, looks like a good one with lots of info. I currently have a 65 olds 442 and a 68 cutlass S convertible, 65 is pretty much done and I am just starting to collect parts for the 68. If anyone around NY has a good convertible trunk lid let me know, mine is too weak to save...was told a 4dr lid would work as well. How many posts do you need before you can put up a wanted ad? I need parts. Thanks!

thanks, I finished up the 65 last summer and have been driving it as often as I can. The 68 I just got last week, been sitting outside 10 years waiting to be fixed up. Luckily it was on jack stands, it saved the frame and it has no rot, I have had a lot of convertibles and have only had a couple frames that didnt need repairs. The body still needs rust repair in some normal spots but is savable.

We had to start a thing where it requires 5 post to post anywhere. It virtually eliminated the tons of spam we were receiving that messed up the board.

thanks for the welcome, I am in NY between the city and Albany, pretty rural area. For wheels on the 68 I have to lose the buick wheels, I have a set of the 70-72 SSI 14x7s 5 spokes with the chrome spokes I am thinking of using but nothing set in stone yet. I still have to pick a body color, not going to stay with white.

LOL...first let me say if I get an all original car I keep it original, but if it has been modded I build it the way I want..65 had a chevy 454 4 speed in it when I bought it, ran well but I wanted a 455 olds engine. Collected the engine and headers but then got the fuel injection bug and wanted to be able to drive the car to work and on the highway, so I sold the 455 and installed an aluminum headed LT1 and T56 6 speed transmission. Gets over 20mpg around town and much higher on the highway. Not an olds engine but I figure if olds made a performance car in the 90s this engine would have been in it. Welcome to the site from another newbie and 65 owner. Great looking 65, I like the stance. I too like a post car but I did not have much choice here in Thailand as I own the only 65 in country as far as I know. Bought it from a Thai guy who loves American cars. He also has a 1966 88. Nice engine combo had the same in a late model Camero and was outstanding. Have a 4.3 litre V-8 Lexus motor with 32 valves, 4 overhead cams and dual distributors.

plans are not firm on the 68, just got it last week and I just got it running today. Been sitting a long time, had to jump the bad neutral safety switch and file the points to get spark, but she started right up and runs quiet, no smoke or noises. Topped off the trans and drove it off the trailer. Has a miss under load but probably just needs a tuneup and good gas.
I thought maybe the 350 2bbl engine/Th350 trans were original, but I dont think so. Heads are 7As which I dont think were used in 68, block casting number I think was used up to 1970 but I dont have the block code yet.
Thing is while checking out the neutral safety switch I found the car has the TH400 gas pedal with electric kickdown switch. Was an olds 350 ever used in front of a TH400? Was the 400 engine available in 68 in the "S"?

OH NO!!!! you put a non-Olds engine in your Oldsmobile!!!!!!!
Oh well, no flaming here, but it does look very weird with that upper manifold and that narrow engine between the firewalls. Good work on the installation.

If I can find a reasonably priced chrome 65 442 air cleaner I want to mount it on top of the engine and route the air intake to it, I think it would look neat and look more original.
I will have to double check the speedo, the 68 was originally a column shift car and the speedo still has the shift quadrant on it..maybe it was a 2 speed originally, that would make sense. Didnt know about the electric kickdown, only 2 speeds I ever had were glides with mechanical linkage.

The answer to your question about an Olds 350 in front of a TH 400 (in an F-85 series) is yes.
Dealer information bulletin 10 dated January 1969 documents such an occurrence for a short period, I think of the 69 model year only though. I don't have it in front of me right now to give you the specifics.

No steering column?
Never want to flame a 65, but if you ever want to inject an Olds engine (you would not be the first) there is plenty of people who would donate parts to save it-I mean make it happen.

pic was taken during first powerup of the cluster during the build, so no column in the pic. I drive the car a lot and rarely take time for pictures. The speedo is accurate to 1mph and I built the cluster so that it bolts in the stock location in case I ever went back to stock.
I was going to inject the olds 455 with TBI and had all the parts, but it still would have been a gas pig, I have a chevy truck with 454 TBI and it is lucky to get 15mpg. I get over 20 all the time with this setup and was able to easily install the T56 as well instead of the automatic I was going to use with the 455. As far as "saving" the car I did save it, could of been crushed long ago, and whatever is under the hood does nothing to change the styling of the car which is what I love about it. I will never understand why people care so much about what is under the hood, we should all be grateful that these cars are being fixed up at all and not crushed to make hondas.
