Lightbulb How to know if its a true 442?

I just bought a 1964 of an ad on ebay. It really is in great shape. The paint job is fine for now, but not perfect. I just wanted to know if it is a real 442. I don't care because I love the car. But its just one of those things. It is a 1964 f85, which I was told was not designated 442, just had the emblems on the front fenders and rear trunk. It has the rocker arms that were part of the b-09 police option (later designated 442). The engine and transmission both match numbers associated with the 442) but they are not matching. I have the original protector plates and all that info. The car was manufactured in Lansing, MI. I just wanted to see if what I had was mostly a real 442 and there are pictures under my profile. Thanks in advance for your help Custom Oldsmobile friends! I can help by gathering other info if you want it.

Might help for you to post some of those numbers.

That car has been gone over a time or two and those pictures really don't tell us too much.

saw that on ebay. could be the real deal. are you saying the protecto plate eng unit number does not match the number on one of the heads; if so then maybe a different 64 330 eng. From what I see ,looks like a 64 442, but just to point out... incorrect seats at approx. 500.00, steering wheel @ 200, air cleaner@ 900, wheels/ hub caps @400 , shifter @ 200, and missing wheel well trim @ 600. chk the frame pn and rear diff upper arm holes, trunk lid emblem holes and the m20 #s to help verify. ---oh and if you want the correct parts I have them. but they are not cheap.

o4 build date ... you have an early one.

Steering wheel is fine. Wrong center cap.

The trunk holes are there, so that is promising! I haven't had a whole lot of time to look at other things. Thanks for your help!

What center cap of you have on the steering wheel ? I have a 64 that I am looking to trade for a 65

Original color was Turquois Mist....that would be a nice color with the black interior....

No that's not the one I am looking for if I come across one I will keep you in mind for my 64 one. I will need to get a pic but it has the red symbol in a clear glass

I forgot but can take one at work tomorrow also it might be up for sale in a week or so if everything pans out on my 65 center part

Also I noticed that the front signal lights are wrong I have a driver set for sale the are driver at best show there age with stress cracks but would be correct

1964 f85 Holiday Coupes could be optioned as a 442 (W29 package) but that would have shown up on your cowl tag in column 4 as the letter V. I don't believe you have an original 442 but I do believe you'll have a blast owning and driving it.

Al that was the B-09 pkg in '64 and 4V wouldn't show up until '65 IIRC, but yes it could be had on the F85 chassis.

Yes, I saw that B09 package listed in the 64 manual. I thought it would appear on the cowl tag though, like in 65. Oh well...

For the OP, 64-67 and 72 on the 442 was just an option package to be added to specified models. The 442 became its own model from 68-71 and could be easily verified by the VIN designation. On 65-67 the V in the 4th column of the cowl tag would indicate 442 option W29.

In 72, you pretty much needed to have either a build sheet, dealer invoice or broadcast card to show the designation of a non W30 442. In 72, there was no specified engine option for 442s unless you ordered a W30 AT or MT.

Not on Fremont cars. And not on 66-67s.

Your post said 65-67 442s will have a V in the 4th column. 66-67s do not have a V in the 4th, its in the 5th.

And that Oldsmobility info is also wrong, Framingham used the same code system as Lansing. So a Framingham 442 will have 5V on the cowl tag.

I love all the comments I'm learning so much about the car. Its pretty much all said and done until the spring. Any tips on winterizing it. Things I should do to keep it in tip top shape?

When you get it I would check all safety items first brakes steering fluids diff ect.

Also these cars rear ends axle bearings are not the best so check them as well replace if need or just a maw item

Also check out w29board (ultra high compression )
It a bit slow but great info with 64/65
