Hood stripes

Hey guys..can someone please tell me the correct finish for the hood stripes on a 1970 442? I am hearing mixed opinions...I was under the impression it is supposed to be gloss. My body shop is saying matte finish but i think they are wrong.

Looking at factory literature (pictures) the hood stripes appear to be gloss. I will say one thing - matte finish will reduce any reflected sun into your eyes. I don't see anything in the Assembly Manual or paint codes that calls for special matte paint, and I'm sure they would match the stripes to the gloss that was used on the sides/deck lid. See 1970 Cutlass Assembly Manual, section 0, page 41, diagram 406477. The only qualifier they state is recommended stripe color should match top color (2 tone or vinyl top cars) or interior color whenever possible.

I agree with you..everything i have seen looks to be gloss...except the cars that may have had a decal installed aftermarket...those of which look kind of satin to me...hmmm..the matte looks ok but I want it to be original looking

The only ones I know of that had decals were the Hurst Olds in 72. Other than that they were painted. What you can do is paint them as gloss the way they should be, and then if you find it too much glare, you can clear over that with some satin CC.

The Rallye 350 also had decaled stripes. They seem to have a flat sheen until you give your car a couple coats of Turtle wax. Same goes for the standard '72 442 hood stripes that were also decals, though these decals seem to have a satin sheen.

I've been thinking about going to a vinyl shop with hood stripe measurements for my 69. I have no idea on pricing but if you hate the way they look you can always peel them off over having to repaint.
