I know this is an old thread but I'm desperate.. I have the data plate and the stamp on the engine..how do I know if it is a real 442 or if the engine matches the car.. I will add pictures of the data plate the block number is 390925E the clock is stamped 272 which is Sept 29th and the car is a 67..it is an automatic car...I just want to make sure the car is a real 442 or had the option and that the motor belongs to it before I buy it..thank you for any help it's greatly appreciated This is data plate This is stamped on block An other shot of data plate just in case
YES, it's a '67 442 & the 390925E 400 block is correct for a '67 442 (ORIGINAL ????)
the only thing stamped in '67 is the passenger side head, on the forward facing end - it should be stamped "VxxxxxxG", can you locate this number? it would be matched to the "protect-o-plate" if available

WELCOME TO ClassicOldsmobile!! do you have more pics of the car?
the VIN should be in the 338177M33xxxx - 338177M34xxxx range
It is a project car needs to be restored..I was wondering if I did have an actual 442 ..it is the original motor that came in the car..just wasn't sure if this particular car was worth it or not.. I was looking for a matching number 442 but wasn't too sure about this specific year and motor..I couldn't get at the VIN yet but it is there.. it does need to be restored but everything is there would you pay $3000 for it..I will be doing the whole restoration myself Don't have many pictures but this will give you an idea of body condition

Restorations are a labor of love, it will need more than you think. If solid I would pay 3000 for it if I wanted a column shift 442 with bench seat AC and an auto trans. Parts are relatively easy to find for this car.
Just so we're clear, unless you have the Protect-O-Plate, there is no way to determine if the engine is original to your car. Olds did not stamp VIN derivatives on the block or trans until the 1968 model year. Prior to that, the block and trans had unit numbers that were stamped on the P-O-P along with the VIN, so it was possible to link an engine unit number to a specific VIN. In any case, the engine number you posted is not "stamped", it's a raised casting number. It is the correct casting number for a 1967 442, but there is no way to know if it's the original block or not. In fact, even with the P-O-P there is no way to know if the block is original to the car. In 1967 the engine unit number was stamped on the front of the passenger side head. All the P-O-P proves is that this one head is original to the car.
This photo shows the location of the engine unit number for 1967. The engine unit number for a 442 will start with a "G" and end with a "V" with six digits in between them.
