A/C System Lubrication

I'm adding all the stock A/C stuff back into my 65 442 AC Car. It's all new or refurbished. Do I add all the lubricant into the new compressor (system takes 10.5 oz), or does it need to be distributed throughout? According to the assembly manual you can add the oil to the compressor but just wanted to get some thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

Are there any instructions with the new parts? If all else fails, read the instructions!!

If the parts don’t give specific procedures for adding oil, follow the service manual.

I found the service manual, it states to add 10.5 oz if the whole system was evacuated (as in my case).

The oil's only purpose is to lubricate the compressor pistons. However, after you run it a while, some of the oil settles in the evaporator and condenser, that's why you need to put in so much--there needs to be enough extra that it can continuously circulate to the compressor.

You can distribute 30% of the oil if you feel more comfortable with that. It just replicates the state of the system a few hours into use.

On an all new systems, as you stated yours is. Add the sec'ed amount to the compressor and you are good. Then run in upon start up will circulate as needed. Also be sure to use the CORRECT OIL and VISCOSITY on an R12 System.

Thanks All, I'll add the 10.5 Oz to the compressor. The paperwork with the compressor (AC Delco) said to use AC Delco P/N 15-118 oil.
