Hi, my studs broke off and destroyed the hub in the process, so I can't pull through new studs, nor weld them on; thus I need a new hub.


Anyone know where I can buy a front hub (new or an old original) for a 1969 442, with drums on the front?


I found a new cast iron hub for sale on ebay that said it was for a 64-72 Chevelle, but would fit any A, X F DRUM BRAKE CARS, including Oldsmobile. It also stated it was: 7/16"-20 STUDS, 5 ON 4.75" PATTERN and INCLUDES A6 A2 BEARING RACES INSTALLED. That's al the info the ad gave, no part number. Anyone know if the 64-72 Chevelle Hub will work for my 1969 442... will it fit ok?

 

The difference from the Olds and Chevy, for one is,the Olds hub is pressed tight to the drum, and the Chevy is loose, you can pull it off by hand. You can pound or press the Olds hub off the drum, nut I'm not sure you can put on a Chevy drum. I would look for a Olds one.

 

It might be a crapshoot, but try the www.supercarsunlimited.com web site and on-line catalog. They deal strictly with Oldsmobile and they sometimes have good condition used parts for sale.

thank you, guys. One note: 422Harv mentioned the "Hub is pressed tight to the drum", which makes sense.

However, I noticed on Randy's suggested website, www.supercarsunlimited.com, that the site sells 2 different Drum Parts…
1) No. 06-020 which states for all 68-72 models with hub and drum "pressed together"(note: new studs required for replacement of drum), and
2) No. 06-022, states for all 68-72 models with "separate hub and drum"(note: new studs not required for replacement of drum).

This makes me think there are two kinds of Hubs for a 1969 442, a Hub that is pressed to the drum, and one Hub that is separate from the drum?

Are there two kinds for front Drum brakes? Just want to make sure, so I buy the right one.

 

Wow. You got me on that. The drums on my '68 are the press-tight type. What I would do is give Greg Rollin a call at Supercars. Greg is sharp on Oldsmobiles - I think he would know the answer for you. The phone number should be on the web site. By the way, when you call, Greg is usually the person that answers the phone.

I'll give Greg a buzz. It's my first time doing a hub/drum on this car, so I'm a tad green with the right parts. Agree with 442Harv though, I should not put a Chevy Hub on my 442, even though the Ebay ad says it'll fit. I best be patient and wait for the right part. Those Hubs are just hard to find. I'll buzz Greg tomorrow.

 

There is no reason why you can't use a slide on drum on your hub. Chevy has use slide on drums for years. Buick, Olds,Pontiac use the pressed drums so you had to buy hub and drum assy. More $$$$$ I pressed my drums off, and drilled my drums a butt hair bigger than the stud. Now they slide on and off with ease. You bolt the wheel back on, the drum can't go anywhere.
Now when I rotate my tires, I can slide off the drums and clean all the brake dust out.
