1972 4-4-2 questions

Hi, someone posted a query in a diecast site and wants to know whether the rocker panels should be painted or chrome.

I suggested, based on literature (http://oldcarbrochures.org/NA/Oldsmo...e-Dealer-SPECS) that if it was a Cutlass, it should have no rockers, but if it was a Cutlass S, it should have chrome rockers.

Does this sound right?

There is no rocker stainless trim on any '72 W-29 442s, whether a car was derived from a Cutlass, Cutlass S or Cutlass Supreme model level.

I'm confused now.

So no 1972 4-4-2s received rocker moldings?

That's correct. No rocker moldings at all, just like in 1970 and 1971. Just painted.

Any 72 2 door coupe (HT or Post) could be a 442, along with ANY of the available engines for the year. The W29 package called for appearance and handling changes that differentiated it (eg: grills/stripes/trim) and made some features (such as suspension) standard when the other models offered them as options.
Note: On CS lineup, only the vert was available to receive 442 option

The 72 442 W30 major upgrades were the L77 engine, dual exhaust and cutout rear bumper. BTW, the car in my sig pic is a clone W30 and has the rocker stainless.

The info in the literature doesn't show the rockers to be deleted when equipped with the W29 package. Interesting....

Actually it does if you look at the side pictures. Just you have to look carefully.

Yes, you'd be correct on that. But keep in mind that that SPECS guide didn't list every component change, just the highlights to generate sales. There was much more than just a few things that separated the W29 from the other Cutlass models. If you use the same website, open the 1972 full model lineup, the picture I posted is also located there, but the rocker is not a clearly defined as a result of the scanned image.

Here Diego; this should help. It's from the '72 Inspector's Guide. If you squint hard enough , you will find the deleted items for W29.
