I took my steering wheel/column assembly out when I repainted my engine bay. When I reinstalled everything there is a gap between the wheel and the column. Is there a trick to getting the wheel back to the column?
Is the nut fully torqued? If so, apparently you pulled the shaft up when removing the wheel. Verify that the turn signal cancel cam is fitting properly into the turn signal switch actuator. Verify that the column housing hasn't slid down relative to the dash.
So after taking the steering wheel off and on multiple times and taking the column apart here is what I have come up with. Everything fits fine until I install the plastic piece with the spring in on the column with the wheel. I can put it on with the wheel off and rotate it and it will cancel the turn signal. I can install the wheel without that piece and the wheel fits nice to the column. After finally getting the piece with the spring installed on the wheel, and the wheel on the column the turn signal cam has a lot of play. I am not sure if I should just order new turn signal parts and try again or what to try next. I would like for my turn signals to work properly and for my horn to work.
That's a very easy fix. Just loosen the 2 nuts on the column strap and easily pull/work the column up to the desired gap. Once you get that done you will need to move the clamp up on the engine compartment side.
Is this the cancel cam that came out of this column, or a new one?
It is the original. Here are a few more pics, even with the wheel on correctly there is a lot of slop in the turn signal cam. It wont even hold itself in the off position. Am I missing something that holds the cam in place?
I didn’t know the 64/65 had a horn contact like that. The wheel I took off looks as if the plunger was install on the back of the wheel with an addition of a roll pin. I’m really confused now.

The roll pin is the cancelling devise for the turn signals for a car with a tilt column. You don't have a tilt so the roll pin is useless. If you have a deluxe wheel the wires coming from the horn bars push into the hole where the spring is and it has a plastic sleeve that pushes in and keeps the wire contact in place.

this what I have so far. Not sure if I’m still missing something
