atf vs p/s fluid?

I had to take my pump off and spilled red atf,the gearbox is full,so I wonder if I should get it all out and put psf in.I read that atf will ruin seals,it already leaks a little. To change or not? Thanks Randy 72 cutlass cvt PS: It is a bit sloppy and I turned the adjusting screw in already, doesn't recover from a turn well and I don't remember this from the years I drove my other 72 during the 80"s,Is this the way these cars are?

Myth.

It is sloppy because, in the past, someone turned the adjusting screw in causing it to wear prematurely.

You don't touch that lash adjustment screw unless you know what you're doing and have the right tools, it's not just a matter of tightening it a little. You can do way more damage than good, some rebuilders won't touch them after the guts are shot and it can also be dangerous if it jams up or breaks the gear. If the wheel isn't centering after a turn it's not right, way too tight.
Messing with that screw can also mess up the pitman shaft seal and start it leaking.
The steering box is probably worn if the rest of your suspension is okay,
I would have that box rebuilt or buy another one.

If you look in the owner's manual it says you can use Dexron ATF for the power steering.

I have a new AVG box and it will void the warranty if you use organic ATF or PS fluid in it, you have to use Royal Purple synthetic PS fluid.

You can have the steering gear box rebuilt to a quicker ratio, or you can just get a replacement from the local auto parts store / Rock Auto.

I've always used ATF, but never knew that was "official".

Yes. Too loose is better than too tight.

Sounds like Royal Purple got into someone's pocket to have that kind of warranty requirement.

It's good stuff, no doubt, but it's hard for me to fathom it being a warranty requirement.
