Question Super Stocks and rubber

Hi all,
'71 cutlass coupe. Has original 14 x 7 (as I understand) steel wheels. Just purchased a set of restored SSIIs, 14 x 6, so I'll be looking for new rubber too.
Main question is, anybody know what would have been the factory performance tire style? Whitewall or white letter?

Thanks

Your options were one of these on H/O and 442 of that era.

If you are looking to keep your car as "origiinal" as possible, the SSII wheel for '71 was 14X7.

Wink "original?"

If I wanted it to be as "original" as possible, I wouldn't be putting Super Stocks on a "base" Cutlass...
Plus the 6s were the ones that I found and liked and were affordable. So there it is.

I think I can live with the 6 v 7 discrepancy.
Forgive my ignorance... is that number just the wheel root width, in inches?

Not really sure where mine falls.
I'd assume G70.

The 14x7 SSI wheel accepts a deeper trim ring, and fits disc brake cars.

Ah, I see. Well I got 4-wheel drum so that's not an issue.

And yet again, ALL SSII/III wheels of ANY factory width will clear factory disk brakes.

F78-14 blackwall standard, unless you have a build sheet or window sticker to show ordered optional tire! FYI if it's Lansing built the build sheet will not be there!

But the OP you asked for performance tire!

Yes, the question was really,
"What's the typical tire style (from factory) with SS wheels?"

Don't really want to put standard blackwalls on SS wheels.

Understood! still blackwalls, factors that change on a 33687 body style choice on tires as far factory standard C60(A/C) FE2(suspension pkg).
This still brings us back to build sheet or window sticker.

This info is free by joining wildaboutcars.com and you can spend hours just on your car plus online service, chassis, and parts # manuals.

I'll go little further that if you want decent handling, modern radials would be best! But the issue is 14" tires are getting thin! Your choices on brand name RWL in P225-70-14 are as follows B.F.Goodrich, Cooper Cobras and Firestone Firehawks.

I agree all this info is on & from "Wild About Cars"

1971 V8 Cutlass - $3021.00
A/C - $407.59 - requires power steering
Power Steering - $115.85

SSI - $90.58
G70-14 white stripe - $64.25
G70-14 rwl - $103.21

Today these prices look like small potatoes - but the SSIs & RWLs (OPTIONAL wheels & tires) added ~7% to the base V8 Cutlass.

$2K on one of todays ~$30,000 new cars.
