I would like to but a pair of 20" rims and some tires on my 1969 Delta 88 ... anyone have any suggestion?

 

Don't.

No offense, it is your car and you can do with it as you wish. Personally, the oversize wheel trend is, to me, just silly. SOME Porsches and Ferraris NEED 20" wheels, but that is ONLY to clear the monster brakes they have. Once you have enough wheel to clear the brakes, there is no need for more.

 

I don't know if I'd go as big as 20s or not, but they'll probably be easier to find than 17" or 18" which would look better on that car than 20s IMHO.

What you will get into is finding a 5x5 bolt pattern wheel that is not so wide it upsets low-speed steering. You also need to make absolutely sure whatever wheel you put on there is weight-rated to carry that fat-assed Delta around. In other words, make the seller show you a DOT stamp. You do not want a Chinesium wheel breaking on you going down the road.

Larger wheels and tires don't bother me as much now as they did a few years back. I guess I've gotten used to them, and if they're sized right and tasteful don't look bad. I still have a serious problem with any car that has to have suspension lifts to fit wheels and tires under it. That just screams ghetto, not to mention looks like ***.

 

I like large runs when done to compliment the car. I mean, these are big cars, sometimes they look silly to me with 14 or 15 inch rims...

 

Big Delta's like that look perfect with 20" wheels. The mistake most people make is the style of wheel. The one piece chome wheels down at rent-a-tire don't do it. Select a classic looking style. The Coys 5 spokes are about as cheap as the Rent-a-tire specials but look much better.

It depends on the wheel.

I hate the ghetto fab wheels that are out now. All chrome face, 30 spoke wheels, etc.

If you do go with the really ugly and heavy rims, please do everybody else on the road around you a huge favor and upgrade your brakes.

I saw a 22 inch rim at a rim shop once, it weighed 110 lbs, not counting the tire. Your stock set-up rim and tire probably comes in around 50 lbs or so. Use common sense

 

I appreciate the feedback; I am not trying to but in a lot labor in making this happen. I did not take into consider the suspension. Those 14” look so plan and out of place. Hmm maybe replace those hub cabs with rims instead. Please suggestions????

A friend of mine is running 17" rims on a Buick GSX. They do look really good because the car is slammed down just a touch. The design of the rim is really nice here is a pic.

See, this is the problem.

How can the correct wheels and tires, that were installed by the factory, and that were on millions of cars of various manufacturers over many years, look "out of place?"

I mean, hey, it's your car, and you can do whatever you want with it, but I think that full size cars that were built to be smooth luxury(-ish) drivers look stupid with big rims, mag wheels, dubs, donks, dinks, dirks, or whatever you call them this week.
Hot rods (generally mid-size or smaller cars), okay, fine, a nice set of Cragars or whatever make them look like they looked back when the kids would put station wagon springs in the back and drag race at the edge of town.

If you want my opinion (and you did ask for it ), I'd say get a set of factory 15" rims and find a set of factory "wire wheel" spinner hubcaps, from any GM line, and install those. They're about as fancy as you could get in those days, and they don't scream "Granny left me her car, and I didn't want to make any real improvements on it, so I spent the price of a second car on wheels that serve no purpose other than to get me pulled over and strip searched."

I've got 17" rims on my delta and get lots of compliments about them... nonetheless, I'm planning on replacing them with a more "appropriate" style wheels when I wear these tires out. IMO, the 20's I've seen look pretty ghetto on a classic car.

What I think YOU should do is find people who have Delta's with larger rims by asking them to post pics.
Don't ask people's opinions of what you should do, explore what people with similar interests have done.

99.9% of the time its REALLY dependent on the style of the rim and stance.
In most cases , I don't like 20" on classic body lines at all.

Most people ruin the stance, and/or have the tire profile sucked into the wells.

It's all personal taste, so to each their own. Just stating my opinion.

17's and 18's look far better and are a better choice for performance over 14 and 15" factory rims.
Why ?? Smaller the rim, the larger the sidewall and that is good for absorbing suspension travel
but very bad for cornering slouch and body roll.

Let's face it......40+ year old 14" rims are dinky.

 

This IMO doesn't look too bad.
HOwever, like you said it's a photoshop and might not be 20's.

The stance is great, and the entire rim and tire is showing all around.
I can say I think this rim style works.

My only complaint is that he sucked the front rims too far into the fender.
It needs a few more inches to show the profile of the tire because that front
fender body line around the tire is MUCH bigger then the rear is.

It doesn't look right with the wheel so far into it IMO.
THis is all just personal taste tho. This rim style does look good IMO.

I am guessing he likes to make turns. When a car is that low you have to center the front wheels in the wheel houses to still be able to drive.

 

 

This is a 66 that I recently saw at a reunion, I think he was runnin 24's on a 66. I probably would have gone with a different design but hey, it's his or her ride, looks good and they can do what they want with their car.

 

All I can say is " Where are these peoples friends when there doing these things to there cars " A real FRIEND would say WHAT ARE YOU THINKING !!!!! Just saying... IMHO !!

There are two sides to every coin. In this day & age with a big car like that I'd say you should think twice about limiting yourself to a contact patch of 225 or 235. I think the red 'vert with the 17's looks good & is tasteful.
