Painting SSI Wheels
Painting SSI Wheels
So probably a simple question but I'm a noob and I wanted to see what others have done to paint their SSI or SSII wheels. I have a 72 Cutlass supreme with SSI wheels that are faded to a dull gray with spots of surface rust around the lug nuts. I'd like to repaint them black, any tips? Thanks all!
I've done several sets of SSIs. I usually degrease and sand the backsides and around the lug holes on the front, and even use a scotch-brite pad to get any loose black paint off of the painted sections between the spokes. I am careful not to scuff the spokes though. I then wipe everything down with lacquer thinner to degrease one more time. I use masking tape around the center hole and spokes then hit them with a few coats of satin black. Any excess paint that gets on the spokes can be easily scraped off with a blade after the tape is removed. Just use patience and they'll come out nicely.

2 layers of HD duct tape on the spokes and chrome areas. Trim with a razor blade.
Bead blast all the paint and rust off.
Degrease with laquer thinner
2 coats of an etching primer
2 coats of Eastwood Rally Wheel paint

I just took all mine to the powdercoaters and let them do it all...

It was 300 bucks for blasting and coating 5 wheels, but was worth it to me...
Bead (sand) blasting is the best way to get around in all those small nooks and crannies...

That's what I did with a set of SSII's. Powder coated with a semi gloss black. The car is metallic silver, so I thought the black wheels would balance well with the black vinyl top. I would post some pix, but they are at the shop right now. Chumley
Are those tires still available ?
I'm just curious what kind of tires you have on your car ( photograph ). I've never seen anything like that....
