I have 68 Delmont 88 that had 855/14 tires. When I updated in 1988, A tire guy suggested radial tires but I had to find 15 inch rims. the rims are off of a 1972 88. He mounted 235/70/15 cooper tires on them. I found out later that the rims are 6.5 inch so the mounted tires are wider and not nearly as tall. I now want to go to 16 inch rims but I do not know what rims will fit the bolt pattern. It is about 5'' accross and a 3" ? center. I couldn't find the original measurements anywhere. What year rims will fit and how tall can I go in the rear wheel well to improve milage. The original 855/14 tires were 82 ? I think. I'll leave the front the same diameter as the original 29.1'' to keep the speedometer accurate. Ken

I would Google "GM wheel bolt pattern chart" to see what cross references. Are you looking for a 16" Steel wheel or are you wanting to buy a set of aftermarket wheels?

Chevy or GMC pickup/van (5-lug) wheels will fit.
Unfortunately, I think even the 2-wheel drive trucks went to a 6-lug hub about the same time 16" wheels became common.
94-96 Chevy Caprice police cars had 16" steel wheels.

 

I just went to the garage and measured the rims. The bolt pattern is 5 X 5 with a 3" center. I have Cooper 235/75/15 tires on it. The rims are 6" wide. I need to go to a 7" rim. The SS II and SS III didn't come with 5" bolt pattern. I think the SSI rims came in 5X5. I might have to go that way. I want to be able to put a taller tire on the rear for better milage. Any ideas. Ken

are you wanting a taller tire or taller rim? you are kind of all over the board here and not quite answering the questions that are asked.

I'm also confused about the "going with a taller tire to improve mileage" comment. you don't always need a wider rim as sometimes you can go taller with a tire size while keeping the width the same. Again, a Google search of "tire size 101" may be helpful to you.

I GOOGLED gm bolt pattern chart. They did NOT show my vehicle. I want a taller tire but most of the taller radial tires require a 7" rim. I GOOGLED a tire size calculator and most of the tires that would work are 16's. I just want to put the taller tires on the rear. A 2'' taller tire will increase my mpg about 10%. I've got room to go with a 3" taller tire and still have plenty of room with 5 adults and 150 lbs in the trunk before the bump stop comes into play. Now do you see where I am going? what I meant was you can Google how to measure bolt pattern and then go out to your car and measure it. more than likely its going to be 5 on 5 or 5 on 4 3/4. From that you can start searching online for what vehicles came with what you are looking for.

 

No anger. Just trying to find out if anyone has used bigger tires and rims and what may have worked for them. My pattern is 5 X 5 with 3" center bore. Thanks, Ken

 

I have a set of 4 factory steel 15x7 wheels in nice condition that came off a station wagon that might work for you. A 255-70-15 tire works well on a 7" wheel and would give you a nice tall tire.

 

Orange 442- I found two 16X7 5 by 5 rims that will work great. Thanks for the info anyway. Ken
