72 Cutlass S grey wheels
72 Cutlass S grey wheels
Anyone know the color/shade of grey the wheels were that came on 1972 Cutlass S. Can't remenber if I special ordered them grey or if it was standard. I'm attempting to restore to original.
The area exposed to the sun is much lighter that what has been hidden under the ring for all these years.

Thanks
Richey

richey, check this thread out, obviously after all this time there are lots of opinions on the "correct" argent grey, and who knows how many varitations of the paint was delivered to the factory in the first place

I've read many discussions in many places about wheel re-finishing and the one part that always seems to get left out when talking about Olds rally wheels is the sheen. They did not have a gloss finish. At least not until the SSIII painted body color. In 1983 I bought a 69 Hurst/Olds that had been parked in a garage since 1972. It had 19,000 and change on it. The car still had that new car smell. So the wheels had not suffered much in the way of fading and the wheels were not gloss. It was not completely flat finish either. It was "semi-flat" finish. If you look at the wheel that 2blu442 posted in the other thread you can see on one side of the wheel the color and sheen look very original. I hope this helps.

Thanks to all for the all the advise on colors, light, dark, grey and no clear coat.... I commited and ordered the spray paint for Super Stock II wheels from Fusicks WP 5S Silver Gray Paint and what arrived was labeled "Charcoal Grey" My origianl wheel paint had faded to a lighter grey and the paint hid under the rim was a darker grey. so I think what I have ended up looks pretty much original? If not it look so much better than before....You can follow my pictures and see the remakable recovery back to new condition... amazing what a couple coats of paint will do.

Before starting wheel rehab

Original wheel with Bezels removed. They can just be poped out from the back.

Polished them all up with Mothers...and fixed clips with screwdriver

Masked off tire and did a rust proof primer...

Sprayed a couple coats of Charcoal Grey Wheel paint...

Popped back on the Bezels

All popped on easily

put the original Wheel Trim Rings back on after polishing.....

Pulled the wheels and replaced the Super Stock center caps, applying a little red Lock Tight to hopefully keep the screws tight...

End result looks great, but might be a little darker than original. Not sure so that argument can continue...
This took a little longer than planned (3weekends)but worth doing it right...
Thanks to everyone for the help.
Next will be the interior--Legnedary Original Repo seat covers, New carpet, sound proofing, package tray and they finally I'll try a headliner...don't expect to finish that in a couple weekends...hopefully by the end of summer....

Nice work, Richey!
I know this is an older thread....
Your wheels look wonderful! I really like that colour argent. Does anyone know a PPG or Dupont code for that paint. If I was still in the States I'd buy from Fusicks, but in Canada, paying shipping and duty will double the price.
Again, this looks amazing.

I'm a bit late responding to this thread. Below is a link to my page. Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see two pics. The pic at the very bottom has the gray appearing as a bit lighter and represents what it looks like on a sunny day. I used a gray that Eastwood sold about six years ago though not sure if it's the same as sold today. It looks similar to what Adam was interested in. Might be a little different than original '72 but looks good to me and has held up well.
