Wide Tire

Hi, I'm restoring a 71 cutlass S and am wondering what is the widest tire that can fit a stock rear. I know this depends on the wheel, so I'd like to add that I don't want the tires to sitck past the quarters too far. Also I am thinking of going with 15" wheels.

Thanks!

I have 245/50 16's on the back of my 71 Cutlass S - certainly not the widest or biggest that would fit under it, but I drive the car daily year round, so I wanted some clearance, and they do fill the wheel wells nicely IMO. Oh and 225/60 15's on the front...

You're forced to go to 15" wheels due to the limited selection of 14" tires today. 255/60-15s on 15x7 wheels with zero offset work great. Rears can go to 295 series tires with the right amount of offset.

I have 275/60/15's on my '72. Check out my album. Same size tires on the yellow and red car.
