Tony's Two-tire blowout

Hello All,

Last weekend i was driving around (and actually behaving) around 35MPH on a local road.

I hit a MASSIVE pothole and completely shredded two tires on the passenger side of my vehicle.

Called my Montreal insurance, supposedly if i'ts not wintertime, the city has an iron-clad contract where you can't claim insurance money. So looks like i scrapped two rims and tires and i'll have to park my car for the winter.

Luckily, there's awesome people in this world, Professeur was kind enough to lend me two of his spare tires that i could get my car home without needing a tow, because who carried two spare tires in their trunk? Maybe i'll start...

The tires on the other hand ... just two more to the Montreal Body count.

My tires won't be going anywhere anytime soon. The Pontiac's already got her winter boots on until April. Honestly, I'd have been happy if you'd kept them under the Cutlass to keep it mobile. If you need them again, don't be shy. We're all in this together.

They're not completely destroyed, but it looks like someone took an angle grinder to the lip and hit it a couple times... It just makes my heart sink man..

That's a good price, you ought to get all of them.

He wants 115$ for a set of 5, i guess i could just choose the best 5 out of 7 that he has and call it a day.

Tony? Those wheels in the pic you posted are chrome wheels from an 80's Cutlass so you wouldn't even need trim rings! Plus if he wants only 115 for 5? WITH tires? That's only 23 bucks apiece. Well worth it since it also appears to include center caps.

What does winter have to do with it?

I'm betting that winter is a factor because pothole repair is just not done then or you can't see the pothole in time to miss it.

Al is exactly right, the Quebec government expects us to see the potholes if they're not covered in snow.

Supposedly it'll cost more in court costs than i can possible get in wheel costs.

Oh well...

And even then, it's like pulling teeth to get anything. The joys of no-fault gov't enforced insurance.

Man! Must have been quite a pot hole! Did it damage anything with your steering? I'm thinking it would have at least messed up the alignment, but I've seen tie rod ends bent from impacts too.

Man, John, i must have a horse shoe up my you know what because when i drove the car home the alignment was almost perfect. I'm thinking when i put a new set of tires on the car next year i'll have an alignment done anyway.

When i did my control arms last winter, i aligned my car using a level, some string and two full pop cans...

Thats a bummer for sure. So let me understand this? The insurance company is connected to the city with some sort of contract?

Wow. Quite a pothole, Tony. I'd avoid that one next time.

I've had damage from an unmarked raised manhole in NYC before - not even worth pursuing it. Best you'll get is "Sucks to be you." And, for a few hundred bucks, I wouldn't try to go through insurance - they'd probably raise your premium by a thousand.

Yeah they`d probably increase my premium astronomically.

Good news is i have all winter to look for two matching rims, i parked the car on jacks earlier this week and she`ll stay like that all winter.

I`m just glad the rest of the car didnt get damaged, the only thing i noticed is that my hood alignment is maybe a bit off now, but i can hopefully fix that in the spring.

Ohhh I had a man hole cover attack my car when I was a kid 2 separate times, they were raised during the road repaving process. One time it caught the H pipe and destroyed 2 exhaust manifolds, and the other ripped a hole in the oil pan.

Why? I'd rather have it on wheel dollies just in case of emergency.....and, cars were designed to sit on their suspensions.

Jack stands are a necessity for doing mtce on the car IMO, not for storing it.

Man that sucks Tony !I almost had the same thing happen to my son with the daily driver last winter he hit a pothole with the front passenger side tire and bent the rim ,but the tire was ok ,good thing it was the winter steelies .So i sent an email to the city wanting money to fix it... never heard from them.I went back the next day to find the hole and the city had already fixed it !!! .I ended up putting two new rims on the car as the back pass side was bent also upon further inspection .Good luck with the repairs ,you should be able to find some rims over the winter.

FDR Drive South, below 23rd, during a period of repaving. I was doing about 65 in a 455 '68 Delta Custom, caught the completely invisible manhole dead center on the crossmember between the front wheels.

The car never drove exactly the same again.

Attack of the killer potholes. You guys should visit Edmonton in the spring. Then you can cower and wonder how we survive through those suckers. Some are big enough to swallow buses. And for the record, we had over 600,000 potholes filled this year. In a couple cases the roads were just shut down and repaved the holes were so numerous and dangerous. Our streets make a backwoods gravel road look good by comparison.

Thanks guys,

yeah you know what copper, that style of wheel does look pretty sharp. i always thought i'd be more of an SSI guy in the longrun but maybe cragars would look better. I need to figure out how to use photoshop so i can try on my dream wheels (SSI's with redline tires)
