Steel wheel correct color confusion

I am trying to figure out the correct way to finish my stock OE 14 inch steel wheels on my 1965 Dynamic 88 & Delta 88.

After many years of being rattle can sprayed black I took a close look now that they are dis-mounted and being stripped. They appear to have a light grey finish on back side and inside & front was sprayed black as evidence of overspray onto the grey of the inside where you do not see when tire is mounted.

on another note, was the spare tire rim, a body color matching wheel? I have a green one to match a green parts car I stripped years ago.

any input is appriciated

My '62 rims are similar in that they are body color (black) on the front and grey on the back. Yes, the spare should match the other 4 in terms of body color.

Both my 64s had gray steel spare wheels as have my 70s cars with steelies. I think it changed from year to year, actually.

Generally what I've seen is that cars with full wheel covers got black wheels and cars with dogbowls got body color or white wheels. It may have been an assembly plant thing as I have seen 60s cars with full wheelcovers and painted wheels.

The wheels were painted light gray on the back side and black on the front. The wheel covers for the most part were full and very little of the rim shows.
