For Sale "Wheel Set" Quantity
It appears that even for pre 1978 model year cars, only 4 wheels are offered for sale as a "set" by sellers in the classifieds, eBay, Craigslist etc. Are the matching spares of parts cars going forgotten and winding up in the crusher? For those that buy only a "set" of 4 wheels, is a regular steelie residing in the trunk? It is realized that some manufacturers back then only furnished 4 fancy extra cost, road going wheels when the option box was ticked off and stuck the buyer with a regular spare or collapsible spare, but Olds supplied all 5 positions with the upgraded wheels. Where are all these orphaned, single unit wheels? Again, 1978 and newer are excluded due to spare donut fitment.

For some unknown reason, they just seem to come in sets of 4 for sale. Apparently, the spare SSI in my '69 4-4-2 was used to build another set of 4 as when I bought it in 1987, the spare was gone. And it was a hard SSI wheel to find, too, as it was the kind for disc brakes. I finally found one in a pick-n-pull on a Buick, of all things, about two years after I bought the '69. If you don't have a matching spare, just keep your eyes open and ready to jump when it comes up!
