I need to replace the two front tires on my '72 Supreme (after an alignment). I have Cooper Cobra Radial GTs with the old style lettering and it seems they're hard to get now.
I'm running 275-60s out back, and the rears are good, so I don't wanna buy all 4. This is the new style lettering...
I don't wanna have two different letter styles, so I'm stuck...what would you do?
You could price a set of 4 used white letter tires. You might be able to get them for the price of a pair of new ones. No guarantees on what tires you might find or what size they'll be though.

Exactly, plus I'd have to pay to have the rears mounted and balanced, and as I said, I don't need to replace the rears.
I replaced two front tires on my 2003 F250 diesel 4x4 last week - the rear tires were fine - LT325/65R18/10 ($860.00). They don't match the rear tires exactly (same brand, better tread grooves along the sidewalls), but they're brand spank'n new.
Get the new Cooper Cobra GTs and flip them to black wall out.
This is what I would do, it's cheaper to remount and balance 2 tires than replacement. I have the black side out currently on my car and like the look.

???...I need two new front tires but not the rears. If I go with black wall out, then I'll have to pay to have the new fronts mounted AND then I'll have to pay to have the rears switched to the black wall side...savvy?

That's ONLY if you want black walls out all the way around.

yes I savvy, as I said turning the current rears to black wall out and rebalancing is cheaper than replacing them in order to get all the fonts to match. Your changing the fronts anyway.
My mother would always say, "a fast trotting horse will never notice".
Other peoples minds will subconsciously see them as the same. It's like the puzzle pictures where you have to find the changes between them.
People will only notice if you point it out and they are at a distance away.
Go to the store where you'll be buying them and stand one up against your wheel and see.
I was faced with switching to Cooper Cobra's from BFG's. I think they are awesome with the Cobra's on the black side. Plus I can use up all extra BFG's before they age out.
My feeling exactly. I think next spring I'll flip my BFG T/As and go all blackwall for the remainder of their life. It looks much better than brown letters.
Were you able to scrub the white letters on the BFG TAs so they were clean, or was the rubber permanently dirty? I've heard of white wall tires that won't scrub clean.
I was initially disappointed when I bought a fresh set of Cobra's and saw they revised the font, I really liked to old style. But, I'm already used to it. Nothing stays the same, I guess.
I figured you would want to know if there were white letter tires out there that had bad rubber and were permanently brown/yellow. The Ironman RB 12 white walls I put on my 96 98 still look good, but apparently later manufacturer dates have bad rubber and they don't clean up well. I didn't intend to hijack the thread.

Na...the Coopers do pretty good, but thanks anyway.
I have all the same size on my Olds- imagine that.. I can rotate them! Fronts always wear sooner than rears. BFG browning is always brought up. I have them and they aren't brown. mine are 2007's which of course should be replaced due to age. I am not a fan of the looks of the Coopers- though not bad looking, just not the type I remember. To me a Cutlass looks too plain without white letters or whitewalls. I had some old Goodyear Eagle Gt's on SSIII wheels on my 70 Vista- looked bad ***, replaced them with generic blackwalls really looked alot worse. Sorry to derail, but isn't that what happens and makes threads interesting? Just like conversations- subjects change ...??

That's pretty funny! I guess there are 2 camps: those that like stuff on tires and those that don't. Personally, I think RWL look trashy and WW look cheap.

I have tried many solutions suggested on CO and elsewhere, plus many more I thought of on my own. My conclusion is that the condition is permanent. However as noted, this is probably a topic for a different thread.
