Keeping Hubcaps On

I have a 55 Olds Super 88 and had to get new wheels made to fit over a disc brake conversion - the new rims appear to be the same as stock on the street facing side - same size, same shape, taper, etc - and the original hubcaps fit in pretty tightly - but from time to time the hubcaps come off on the road - nearly killed a bicyclist the other day, so off they came.

Anyone have ideas on how to keep them on the rim? I have thought about having a groove ground for the clip to hang on or a bead welded, but before I unmount the tires (yes, no work on rims with mounted tires! Kaboom). I thought I'd ask for suggestions.

Thanks!
