Canadian Tire Prices Skyrocket

So, before this month. The standard price for a 225 70 R14 BFG Radial TA was 125 dollars. I can live with that.

I went to check on the price today, 155.00 + Installation

I need to buy a spare tire for my trunk, but that's outrageous?!

Why the heck would i pay 155 dollars for a BFG if summit and coker has a tire that will fit my 14x6 for a little over 200??

http://www.cokertire.com/d70-14-fire...-oval-rwl.html

I'm flabberghasted.

Please comment if you feel the same way.

-Tony

Whoooaa!! Don't get upset so easy. I just checked Costco and they have 225/70/14 BF Radial TA's for 129 and 15.00 for install. Of course you still have to pay the recycle tire fee and HST that you'd have to pay anyway. But Have a look

Allan: This should be no problem except, I haven't been to Montreal, PQ since 1980. Great city. I had a great time and I'd love to go there again!

Canadian Tire Prices Hmmmm...

Tony: The first two that I listed are from the US. I purchased 4 BF Goodrich Radial TA's from Discount Tire in Michigan last year for my '67 Delta 88. The third one, Active Green + Ross is a Canadian company. They have a number of locations including Windsor, ON.

I purchased a set of 4 Michielin tires from Active Green + Ross for my Dodge Ram 1500 last year and they were less expensive than Belle Tire and Discount Tire.

This needs repeating... Last year, I purchased 4 tires for my Dodge Ram 1500 from Active Green + Ross. They were less expensive, after the taxes, mounting, etc. than the two main US tire discounters.

I hope that will a little more searching, you will also find some place with less expensive tires. Canadian Tire does put their tires on sale through out the year.

Also try looking at large indipendant tire dealers. Since you know the brand and size of the tire that you're looking for, you can compare apples with apples.

Take your time and please let us know how things work out for you.

Tony, I just had a quick look, and I did see find any Active Green and Ross in Montreal. But they do have locations in Ottawa and Cornwall, Ont. (Cornwall is closer to Montreal than Ottawa).

I just checked on line at Canadian Tire and they list the T/A at $138.99 with a $50.00 rebate for a set of four, bringing the cost down to $126.50 each. However, I agree they have shot up in price as the last time I checked they were $118.99. I plan on getting a set very soon as my Eagle STs are 18 years old and besides being worn down quite far are cracking between the treads and I'm a little nervous about their safety. I wish they still made them as I prefer their look over the Goodrich brand. No other choice for original named tires in a modern radial as far as I know.

Thanks for the input everyone!

I wish i needed a set of 4 (so i could get the 50 dollar rebate) But i only need one single tire for my spare rim that i painted yellow.

I will look at all the options and buy it wherever is most reasonable and DEFINITELY check out active green and ross!

Ottawa is such a close trip for me, my PO Box is 1 hour from montreal, and ottawa is probably 1.5.

On a side note, what do you guys think of the Wide Oval tires?

I just think they look really cool, except 800+ dollars is a bit steep... Unless of course jaybird has some tricks up his sleeve to find em' for less

Sorry to side track, but am I the only Canadian who thinks "Canadian Tire prices skyrocket" and not "Canadian tire prices skyrocket" when I see this thread title? (or is that what you meant?)

Tire prices have gone up dramatically everywhere, however the BFG 225/70-14s are $95 US plus shipping from Tirerack.com.

http://www.1010tires.com/Tires/Search is a good website to look at prices. All prices are in Canadian dollars & tires are shipped from within Canada so no duty or brokerage to deal with.

And don't forget Costco. They carry BFGs & have some of the best prices.

Tony, I too was quite, and am still flabbergasted with tires as you will see in the following story. I will agree that when you have the time to look, but with caution for the stated reasons below, one can find some pretty decent prices on tires, and hopefully make a trip across the border and get the better deals Stateside: Last summer I was hoping to get one more season out of my old Dunlop GT Qualifiers but on the way home from cruise on a hot day, the left rear just about threw a tread right before we got home. Happy birthday Howie from 'Sammy' our Vista Cruiser, now buy me tires! I did see some deals in BFG T/A's as low as $140-ish for the P245/60R-15's the car is fitted with BUT all please take note, the date codes on some were saying the tires were almost 2-years old already. Because the car sees limited driving, and new tires would be on for a long time, I opted to go with an independent dealer at $176 each for just made tires. Again, the lesson with bargains is to read the fine print, even on the sidewalls. BTW, I think redline Wide Ovals would look awesome!

What! THere's a date code on tires?? SO far the best canadian place that i've seen is green and ross, but I'm still debating on what type of tires to buy. Does anyone have a picture of a bamboo cutlass with redline tires?? Some guy posted a green '68 for sale today with redline tires and they looked AWESOME.

Thanks again to all for the input, please keep listing any tips/tricks you might have!!

Yes Tony, its required by legislation. Lot's of people have no clue about it either. Fact is some tire stores will sell you tires that have been stored for years as NEW when in fact they're a couple years old already. Have a look: http://www.pjrider.com/TireCodes.htm

Hi Tony. Tomorrow I will take a picture of the date codes on the tires on the wagon now to show what they look like. I'll have to rehash myself how to read them, but it is fairly easy from what I remember. My old ones were 10 years old according to codes, and cracking, they had spent a few years in the California desert sun. I also do have saved in my EBay stuff a picture of a '69 Vista Cruiser in a pale green with a bamboo stripe painted on it with redline tires. It does look awesome! Here is a link to it:

Tony, here's a pic of my spare I finished up yesterday. Bias ply tires have a lot of knocks against them - mine is just the road groove grabbing thing (however, my 2008 Z06 does the exact same thing with tires that cost a fortune), but you just cant beat the look.....

Wow Joe, that's an AWESOME look... it makes me want to lean towards a wide oval for my spare so that i can eventually put them on the rest of my car...

i did the EXACT same as you did with your spare, i put the center cap and little trim but no large trim ring.

Allan actually posted below, it's a great site, the last 4 digits of your tire code should be [WW/YY] where the last 2 digits are the year. and if it's 3 digits that means it was made in the 90's...

SO news on the tire front.

I ended up finding a 225/70 R14 Radial T/A tire at my local rinky-dink garage for 120 dollars + installation. I thought that was a fair enough price for me given the following reasons
A) not to have to drive anywhere, i walked there with my rim
B) there was a '73 toro parked in the driveway getting an alignment, i figured this guy knew what he was doing enough to install a tire for me.

Here are pics of the installation. I also bought 6 feet of brown loop carpet for my trunk, cut it out to fit and pressed it in.

Tires are a petroleum based product so prices are up. I had to get a set of 255/60/19's for my wife's SUV. That hurt.

Can i ask what they cost? Mine cost 120 bucks + install and it was hurting my pocket. I can't imagine having to buy 5 at once

Unfortunately, that's meaningless. I bought BFG 255/85-16 Mud-Terrain tires for my dually a year and a half ago for about $150 each. Last weekend at Carlisle, I got two more from the same vendor for $240 each.

And you bought them!? thats almost 500 dollars for 2 rear tires...

Mind you, Joe, the reason i switched to 225/70's was because they are MUCH cheaper than the 215/60's i currently have on my car. it makes no sence to me since there is clearly more rubber on the 225's..

$1,200 for Cooper's one year ago. The kick in the *** was that the OEM Goodyears still had tread but somehow she picked up three nails in the same tire over the course of six months so I wasn't comfortable with that from a safety stand point and didn't want mismatched tires.

I would think that a properly patched (not plugged) radial tire would be just fine for safety. A nail puncture isn't going to separate enough steel under the rubber to cause any issues. I had my Michelins repaired for nail wounds several times when our neighborhood was being built. Funny how the construction guys can shoot nails from 50 feet away and land them on the road... almost like on purpose.

I bought a set of UNIROYAL self seals to take care of them, but they turned out to be crap. The stuff they used to seal leaks 'flowed' enough to always cause an out of balance condition at highway speed
