1964 Vista Cruiser- upgrade to shoulder belts?

From past threads there it seems 1966 was the first year Olds offered shoulder belts in a wagon? I want to upgrade my 1954 to shoulder belts. Is there really no mount point on the 64 pillars? I can easily weld a mount on, but before I tear into it I wanted to double check if there are factory anchors in the side pillars...anyone do this before?

Yes they started in Feb.66 and if the car had the anchors the cowl tag had a hole punched in it. You are out of luck with the anchors in a 64. You can cut the anchor mounts out of a junker and put them in your 64. The 67 mounts are different than a 66 and the Chevy vendors sell complete kits.

1966 was the first year that Olds offered shoulder belts in any car, not just wagons. I retrofitted shoulder belts to my 62 wagon by using an aftermarket anchor plate that I was able to install inside the B-pillar. It's a fairly invasive process that requires cutting and welding.

Correct but if I was retro fitting shoulder belts I would use the 67 up style that doesn't use the bolt style anchor system.

That wasn't an option for my 62.

I actually used these and was able to fit them down in the B-pillar by removing the trim at the headliner and cutting a slot in the top of the inner sheet metal so I could lower them down on a string. I pre-drilled the holes in the inner side of the pillar (it's all metal on the 62 - no plastic cover). I tapped the two outer holes for locating screws and once in place I installed the belt anchor in the main hole. Obviously I have not crash-tested the car. I just hope this keeps me from skewering myself on the non-collapsible steering shaft.
