Guys, is the fuel sending unit the same for a '64 Vista as the '64 Cutlass? I pulled the tank down yesterday and it's going for a dip this week. The sending unit was caked in old fuel goop. Pretty rank root beer.

I don't know it for a fact, but I can't imagine that it would be different.

 

Wagons have vertical tanks not horizontal.

The senders are different.

 

Not on the 64-67 wagons.

 

The 1964 A-body wagons use the same sender as do the coupes and sedans. The only differences are fuel return vs non-fuel return. P/N 6425198 for fuel return, 5642836 for non-fuel return. Note that these are 1964-only. The 1964 senders are 0-30 ohm. Later senders are 0-90 ohm and won't work with a 1964 fuel gauge.

 

Thanks Joe. Would you happen to know any vendors that offer these? I checked the usual's and only see Fuzick with FTU6432 for the '64 with the 3/8" line. I'm not sure about Parts Place version as it's stating a 5/16" line and fitting '64-'67. This car is an A/C car but somewhere along it's life the motor was swapped for a 350. The return line was MIA and the existing unit just had a single line going to it. If the A/C unit's just have another nipple and that's the only difference I may use that one an cap it.

 

Obviously any vendor who claims the part fits 64-67 is selling you the wrong one. Yes, you can just cap the return port.

 

So far the vendor sites I've looked at all have specs that contradict other site specs or flat out don't list specs. Line size, ohm ranges, year coverages. Pretty frustrating. There are non-return NOS listings available out there, but are 2x-4x the price of a new version from Fuzick, Part Place, Inline Tube, etc. It appears that the '64 unit is common to various GM models. At this point I'm going to start with cleaning what was in it and testing the resistance, go from there on what to do next.

So, I went through 2 vendors and both of the pumps I received were not correct for what they stated. One was not the right ohms range and the other was not the right tube size. I finally found one through Autozone that by miracle was exactly what was needed. It's only a single tube connection, so a non-A/C car for the return. Thought I'd post the part number for anyone who found themselves in this situation too.
