Does anyone have a photo or a good set of 70-72 Cutlass Wagon dual exhaust tailpipe hangers for sale? Not sure what correct ones are supposed to look like.

 

Diagrams from the 1971 PIM. I haven't validated whether 1970 or 1972 demonstrate departures from the 1971. I included the two single exhaust diagrams for comparison w/ dual exhaust (last diagram).

 

Didn't notice these two additional diagrams which may provide more assistance.

 

The 1970 PIM shows the same pages as Norm posted.

My Vista came with the L31 engine (455 with dual exhaust) and in comparing the hangers to my 1970 442, the only difference is the rear-most hangers are P/N 406139/144 on the Vista Cruiser. This confirms the PIM notation for 1970 and 1971.

To the OP, did you ever locate the correct hangers?

Gary (VC455) any chance you could take a picture of the muffler hangers on your VC? Looking at the PIM sheets above, the wagon duals use a different hanger than the non wagons. The wagon hangers attach to the bottom of the cross memeber, where as the non wagons mount differently.

Karl, it's difficult to get into position for a good picture with the car on its tires (I don't bend that way very well).

Here's the best shot. It's a portion of the driver-side hanger, but it shows enough to verify the attachment method to the frame.

I bought some from former USA parts about a year ago.

 

Thanks 442man$, I sent them an email about a week ago and haven't heard back. Word is they're out of business.

 

Someone had bought them maybe out of business again. I would try calling that's what i did

 

Yeah, tried that recently, got a fast busy signal for the # and "call cannot be completed" for the 1-800 #. Looks like they're out of business.

 

The Vista muffler hangers are unique to the Vista due to the extended wheelbase and different frame crossmember. The flattop wagons use the same hangers as the coupes and sedans. The Vista hangers are not reproduced.

Note that the Vista hangers have a different shape to the crossbar and the rubber straps both come off the same side. The straps on the non-Vista hangers come off opposite sides of the crossbar, and since they fit just about every other 64-72 A-body, those are reproduced by everyone.

 

Thanks Joe, After studying the PIMs I came to the same conclusion. With Gary's picture the hanger looks easy to make, which I'm going to try.
Joe or Gary, I know it's a pain to get under the car, but if you could get a picture or two of as much of the hanger as possible that would be most appreciated. Knowing the distance of the mtg holes on the cross member (4 1/4") I can estimate the length of the rubber straps based on a good picture.

A 3" exhaust pipe is in the way of my getting a straight-on shot of the hanger. You will need a straight-on shot to accurately estimate as you stated.

This should give you what you need: The vertical distance from the mounting surface on the frame cross-member to the muffler bracket mounting surface is between 3.5" and 3.625." Accounting for the rubber's age-related stretch and distortion at the rivet would probably place the original distance nearer 3.5."

Karl, I lost those about 15 years ago to some high-priced hacks that put on new pipes that kinda-sorta fit. If you find a few sets of spares, I'll take a set.

Gary, the chance of finding one side, let alone a set is near impossible, but I'll keep looking.
Based on your pictures and measurements, and the sketches in the PIMs, I'm going to fabricate a set of muffler hangers. These look relatively easy to make.
Likewise, based on the sketches in the PIMs, I'm going to fabricate a set of tp hangers. I might be able to use the '68-'69 or '65-'66 Cutlass duals hangers and modify them, but not sure yet.
It'll be a while before I get to this, but will post my results.
