1947 76 or 66 Olds

I bought a 1947 Olds fastback from a guy who said it was a model 66 but the more research in did im sure its a 76 the rear bumper wraps around rear fenders and wheel base is 125 so my question is were is the model 76 125' wheel base longer than the model 66 119' wheel base

If you have tag numbers, it will tell for sure. Post the numbers and someone here can tell you what you have.

If you would like to view the specifications of the 60 and 70 series (unchanged from 46-48) from a factory brochure (with pictures) you can see some for the 48 at: http://mymerryoldsmobile.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html

with links to the 47 at: http://mymerryoldsmobile.blogspot.co...g-page_18.html

Keep us posted, and we would love to see pictures!

Best,

You're right, it can't be a 66 as the rear bumpers on Series 66 and 68 Oldsmobiles did not wrap much around the rear fenders as compared to the Series 76, 78, and 98 cars. See the brochure page below. The Series 66 cars are the top two rows on the right. The rest are 76, 78, and 98 (except the wagon).

Your question made me curious so I looked in my Hollander Interchange Manual, 16th Edition, thinking that any of the sheetmetal parts that interchanged would not be where the 76 was lengthened. Hollanders offers almost no guidance in that regard as hoods, front fenders and doors don't interchange between 76 and 66 models so there are no clues in Hollander. 76s are 6 in. longer in WB but 9 in. longer overall as noted by Jaunty75.

If I were you I'd measure the door length of a two door model 66 and door length of yours and compare. GM had a habit in earlier years of stretching bodies in the door area and of course in the roof above the door. Since I have a convertible 66 my door length is probably not comparable to a sedan with B pillar (post). Someone here will have a 66 two door sedan they can measure the door. Just be sure you do both in the same place.

I hope you will subscribe and be active in the "46-48 Olds How Many Own them" thread which is in the Vintage Olds section of the Vehicle Lineup Forum here on CO. There are 20 or more members who exchange information and how-to specific to our 46-48 cars.

the 66 & 68 models were both the same 2 door business type models .the 66 came with a straight 6 the 68 came with a straight 8.the 68 the rear bump guards were closer with a horizontal bar the license plate on the bumper.the 66 the license plate is on the trunk lid .both models had the same wheelbase length .only the 76,78 & 98 had the rear bumper that wrapped around the fenders
