Assembly Line Stampings

Anyone here successfully reproduced the stampings used on assembly lines? After degreasing my blower motor housing for my '55 I found this "23" stamp - there are also a few others on the car, an "OK" on the firewall, and other similar things.

Someone must make these rubber stamps - I have to guess that most GM used similar ones.

Anyone have a source?

Thanks

You can easily find them for 60s era cars, I've not seen much if any for 50s, even Chevy. Unless you're doing a concours level resto it may not be worth the cost of having a stamp made. If you can get something close, inexpensive and "off the shelf" then it may be do-able. I have seen where guys will buy inspection stamps to use once, then resell on eBay etc.

not necessarily doing a concours resto, but I do like details - and since I readily see it, I'd like to reproduce it if the cost wasn't too much...don't always get to disassemble a 57 year old car that was only 7 years old when it was 'put away'.

when i worked at fisher body in the 70s and 80s we used a lot of railroad chalk, and lumber marking crayons to write on the fire wall, doors ect. just to show that it was inspected. sometimes the markings were to show a repair was needed and the writing was not covered up.

Take pictures and measure the physical dimensions of the stamping. Take them to an office supply company (Sta####) They can make a stamp for about $20 per stamp.

If you just need numerals it will probably be cheaper to find them already made. Check eBay also. Not exactly the same, but have you considered stenciling with a paint marker if you can't find stamps or they are too costly?

This might be helpful for those who want to make their own custom stamps.
